7/20/23 Today in Blue Jays History: 10 player trade with the Astros. Eleven Years Ago Today The Blue Jays and the Astros made a ten-player trade. We got J.A. Happ , Brandon Lyon , and David Carpenter . The Astros got Francisco Cordero , Ben Francisco , Joe Musgrove , Carlos Perez , David Rollins , Asher Wojciechowski and Kevin Comer . Happ played for us for 2.5 seasons. He was hurt a fair bit of that time (one of the injuries was when he was hit in the head with a line drive and, surprisingly, ended up on the DL with a leg injury). In the 2.5 seasons, he had a 19-20 record and 4.35 ERA in 58 games, 50 stars. We traded him to the Mariners for Michael Saunders . J.A. wasn't good for Seattle, and they traded him to the Pirates , where he became an excellent pitcher.

6/27/23 An aggressive Billy McKinney is giving the Yankees another offensive contributor. Five years after the Yankees packaged him to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for J.A. Happ, outfielder Billy McKinney found his way to the Bronx again. From there, he was part of the Aroldis Chapman deal that netted the Yanks Gleyber Torres. McKinney's career has really taken a full-circle trajectory since the Yankees signed him to a minor league contract a few weeks ago.

10/01/21 St. Bede alums J.A. Happ, Kyle Dinges enjoying ride on Cardinals streak. If there are two people I wouldn’t mind trading places with for a day (OK, maybe longer than that), it’s J.A. Happ and Kyle Dinges, two St. Bede alums employed by the St. Louis Cardinals. Happ, a 2001 St. Bede alum and BCR Athlete of the Year, became a member of the Cardinals in a July 10 trade with the Minnesota Twins, a veteran of 15 big league seasons. Dinges, a 1995 SBA graduate, has been with the Cardinals since 2008, manager of Cardinals radio sales.

8/28/21 Cardinals ride Happ, Edman to 4-3 win over Pirates.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — By his own admission, J.A. Happ can get inside his head too much sometimes, particularly when the St. Louis Cardinals left-hander faces the same team over and over.

Taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates for the third time in 17 days, the 38-year-old took a deep breath, relaxed and let the guys behind him do most of the hard work.

Tommy Edman hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Paul Goldschmidt had three hits and the Cardinals made a handful of spectacular defensive plays to hold on for a 4-3 win on Friday night.

Edman went deep off Dillon Peters (0-2) to finish a three-run outburst in the fifth and the St. Louis bullpen — which imploded on Thursday — kept Happ unbeaten since St. Louis got him from Minnesota at the trade deadline. Alex Reyes overcame a leadoff single by Anthony Alford in the ninth to pick up his 29th save.

Happ (8-6) improved to 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA in five starts with the Cardinals, allowing two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings with three walks and four strikeouts.

A perfectly executed pickoff throw by catcher Yadier Molina in the fourth, a diving grab by Edman at second base in the fifth and a strike from center fielder Harrison Bader to throw out Colin Moran at the plate to end the eighth helped the Cardinals bounce back from a miserable 11-7 loss to the Pirates on Thursday.

"I can’t say enough about the defense,” Happ said. "Yadi had that pickoff that was huge today, too. Our outfielders have done a great job. Bader’s out there flying around every night. You try to rely on those guys.”

Pittsburgh has managed five runs in three games this month against the player who was a key addition for the 2015 Pirates team that won 98 games.

Those days are long gone in Pittsburgh. Happ, however, finds himself in the same position now as...

8/21/21 Edman thriving again in Cardinals' leadoff spot. The Cardinals are looking for some of those doubles and more Saturday night when they send out J.A. Happ, who held Pittsburgh to one hit and one run over six innings in a start nearly two weeks ago, to face the Pirates again. Lefthanded rookie Dillon Peters, who started the season with the Los Angeles Angels, will make his second start for the Pirates.
