2/19/10Barfield signed a minor-league contract to return to the Padres. He was not invited to spring training, however. "I think there's some familiarity with a lot of people in San Diego, a place where he was comfortable and had success. For us, maybe we can get him going to regain his old form in a place he's comfortable," said Padres director of player development Randy Smith. "Hopefully, he can get his career back on track and we can both reap the benefits."

7/22/08Barfield began playing catch and taking ground balls last week. He's expected to begin taking swings off a tee shortly, so he could be about two or three weeks from returning to game activity. "We'll just go as it feels," Barfield said.

Barfield was hitting .255 with five home runs and 21 RBI with Buffalo. 2/04/07Josh Barfield will be fighting two potential "bad luck" curses this year: the sophomore slump and the transition from the National to the American League. Indian fans have seen their share of young players excel their first full season, then struggle the next (e.g., Jhonny Peralta). Barfield also has two “charms” working: The Jake is friendlier than PETCO, and his dad, ex-pro Jesse Barfield, is but a phone call away for support and advice.
2/01/07Josh Barfield is playing in the first Professional Baseball Gaming League (PBGL) finals tournament this weekend. Barfield tied Devil Rays pitcher Seth McClung for the most video game points during the regular-season. However, McClung got first place honors because he had the most first place finishes. The PBGL plans to bring baseball players and fans together through video games.
11/08/06The Indians acquired Barfield in a trade with San Diego today. "I had no idea when I got the call this morning," he said. "It took me by surprise. 2/05/06The consensus is that the second base battle will come down to Mark Bellhorn and Josh Barfield.
12/20/05From rotohelp.com, "... Although Jesse's son may no longer enjoy unanimous scout support, Barfield continued his march through the system by strongly rebounding for Portland after a down year in the Southern League. With improved plate discipline, power, and surprising speed, he looks like a natural addition to a club on the brink of featuring homegrown potential stars at all four up-the-middle positions. Only the unlikely prospect of severe defensive problems should prevent Barfield from emerging as a capable offensive threat heading towards Rookie of the Year consideration and double-digit draft value."
12/11/05From mlb.com, " ... Padres General Manager Kevin Towers ... said he's eager to see what Bobby Hill and rookie Josh Barfield can do in Loretta's stead. "We wanted to get a little bit younger if we can, and they're going to get a chance," he said."
12/08/05From minorleagueball.com, "... .310/.370/.450 for Triple-A Portland, rebounding from a mediocre 2004 season. Uncertain how he fits into San Diego's plans, but he has little left to prove in the minor leagues."
12/07/05From rotoamerica.com, "... risen steadily through the system, spending all of 2004 in AA and all of 2005 in AAA for the Padres. After a poor 2004 that saw him hit just .248/.313/.417 in the Southern League, he rebounded nicely this year and while it was much more of a hitters league, his performance brought him back into very good prospect status ... still profiles as a solid regular in the majors. He made some adjustments to this swing and really came on down the stretch and appears on the cusp of making the big leagues ... Defensively, scouts and managers praise the improvement hes made in the last year and he now at least profiles as an average 2B. No position change needed. Has a solid makeup and is best in clutch situations where his focus seems to kick into overdrive."
11/28/05From Inside The Dugout, "... After a disappointing 2004 season, Barfield showed a lot of improvement in 2005, though, it should be taken into context since the Pacific Coast League is one of the better hitting leagues ... at times Barfield tries to hit for too much power. Because of this, Barfield strikes out too much. Barfield has also drastically improved his defense. He will likely be able to stay at second base. With Mark Loretta under contract for 2006, Barfield may have to repeat AAA. If his approach is improved, he has a chance to be an all star second baseman."
11/21/05From minorleaguebaseball.com, " ... Josh Barfield ... found his groove in June and stayed in it through the end of the season, hitting .333 in June, .388 in July and .333 in August to finish with a .310 mark. The 22-year-old saw only a slight decline in his power numbers in his first season at Triple-A and drove in 72 runs compared to his average of 109 over the past two seasons, but his OBP (.370) and SLG (.450) were impressive. He also regained his base-stealing form after a lingering hamstring injury limited him to just four swipes in 2004, taking 20 bags in 25 attempts in the Pacific Coast League."
3/16/04Barfield was reassigned to minor league camp today.
3/08/04Running out a grounder yesterday, Josh Barfield pulled his left hamstring, an injury that likely ended the top prospect's first major league camp after just five at-bats. Bochy said Barfield might recover in time to open the season with Class AA Mobile.
3/03/04Jake Gautreau will move back to third base to open Mobile's second-base job for Josh Barfield, the Padres' Minor League Player of the Year in 2003.
12/22/03Barfield was San Diego's minor league player of the year. He had offseason surgery to repair ligament damage, which prevented him from playing in the Arizona Fall League. He'll begin this season at AA, but could be the starting second baseman for the Padres at some point in 2005.
