3/02/09Balentien arrived at Mariners' spring training camp Sunday. He attributed the delay to visa issues traveling through Venezuela. Mariners' manager Don Wakamatsu said that Balentien needs the better part of a week before he sees game action. Last spring, Balentien got off to a good start, but the Mariners optioned him back to Tacoma in mid-June when his average dipped below .200. The team recalled him in August. He finished the year hitting .202 with seven HR - and 79 strikeouts in only 243 at-bats. Balentien said. "I will take that experience and bring it into this year and still try to be myself and try not to do too much and just try to have a little more success." He might not find that success with the Mariners - he no longer has any options, so if he does not earn a spot on the Mariners' major-league roster for opening day he will have to go through waivers.
