"Maybe he can come into Spring Training and open some eyes up. We know he can play the middle of the infield so we're going to see if he can play center field." |
| 12/08/06 | The Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers have considered having Arias play other infield positions and learn the outfield. He is blocked in his path to the majors by Michael Young. The club could need a backup infielder and outfielder, which is one method by which Arias could break into the big leagues. "We've talked about it," general manager Jon Daniels said. "But he's a premium shortstop. It's a possibility." |

| 3/16/06 | Still looks like more tools than results presently. |
| 1/28/06 | From the Fort Worth Star Telegram, " ... Shortstop Joaquin Arias, 21, is likely at least a year away from competing for a big league job. Even so, Arias is one of the Rangers' most intriguing prospects. Manager Buck Showalter regularly marvels at his defense. Baseball America rated Arias the 12th-best prospect in the Double A Texas League in 2005, and he hit .318 as one of the youngest players in the Dominican Winter League. "He still has a ways to go, but he's going in the right direction," Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo said. "The most impressive thing is his strikeout rate [46 in 499 at-bats in 2005]. The tools are there." |
| 1/22/06 | From Mike Hindman, "... the Rangers remain as high on him as any player in their system. Arias continues to be a projectable prospect and as one of the youngest players in the Texas League last year, he did what you want projectable prospects to do. He got better and better, just as he had as one of the youngest players in the Cal League in 2004 ... has plenty of shortcomings: He hasn't shown much power. He refuses to take a base on balls. He committed 29 errors last year. For every two bases he steals, he gets caught once ... He's got all of the ingredients to become another Tony Fernandez. Arias and Fernandez share almost the exact same build: 6'2", 170 lbs., with long arms and legs. Arias has the great range, arm strength and incredibly quick hands of Fernandez. Like Fernandez, Arias is especially good at going to his right ... He's been fast-tracked so far and has always been among the youngest players in his league." |
| 12/09/05 | From rotoamerica.com, "... OPS of .757 doesn't really overwhelm you, but keep in mind, Arias was 20 playing in AA. That's very young. He's more about tools than production right now, but the managers and scouts who saw him play think those tools are considerable. Hitting just .233 through the first two months of the season, Arias caught fire and hit over .350 the rest of the year. He's very athletic and has great range, although like many young kids, he's prone to making errors on routine plays. Has a great arm." |
| 12/05/05 | From rotohelp.com, "... Expect Arias to push Mike Young back to second base or even out to centerfield in another year or two. While his limited power, questionable baserunning instincts, and poor patience all indicated ... struggles for Arias as he nears the majors, the combination of his defensive skills and historically solid BA suggests he'll refine his tools in the Rangers' infield." |
| 12/01/05 | From minorleaguebaseball.com, "... more than handled himself as a 20-year-old shortstop in the Double-A Texas League ... hit .315 to tie for the organizational lead. He also stole 20 bases (down from 30 in 2004), while setting a career high with a .423 slugging percentage (36 extra-base hits). Defensively, he made 29 errors in 118 games, but that's an improvement over the 40 he made the year prior." |
| 11/19/05 | The Rangers added Arias to their 40-man roster, preventing him from being taken in the Rule V draft. |
