WTOP celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month this Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, with stories spotlighting the contributions, culture and accomplishments of Hispanic communities across the D.C. region. In an early May game between the Washington Nationals and the Toronto Blue Jays, infielder Luis Garcia Jr. crushed a towering hit to center field for a three-run home run. The final days of the 2024 season saw the Washington Nationals try to play the spoiler against two teams: They failed against the New York Mets (getting outscored 22-2), while pushing the Chicago Cubs onto elimination island (despite winning just one for four games at Wrigley Field). This comes in the aftermath of reports that the infielder had stayed out all night at a Chicago-area casino Thursday, before a Friday afternoon game at Wrigley Field. The Arizona Diamondbacks erupted for four runs in the sixth inning and held on for their seventh win in eight games, a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals in Phoenix on Wednesday afternoon. The Nationals, who lost their fourth game in a row, scored one run in the eighth on Luis Garcia Jr.'s RBI single off Kevin Ginkel, but with the tying run later at the plate, the right-hander got a ground ball for an inning-ending forceout.
