DET8/9 4:46 AM Charlie Morton (P-DET) Veteran starters take center stage as Tigers, Angels meet. A lack of run support was the only disappointing aspect of veteran right-hander Charlie Morton's Detroit Tigers debut on Sunday. Morton delivered six quality innings against the Philadelphia Phillies, but the Tigers fell 2-0. Morton, the second-oldest player in the majors at age 41 (Justin Verlander of the San Francisco Giants is 42), will make his second start for his new team against the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.

KC8/9 4:31 AM Mike Yastrzemski (OF-KC) Rookies look to make presence felt in Nationals-Giants clash. In a series featuring multiple rookies in each starting lineup, the host San Francisco Giants will pull for Drew Gilbert to get his first major league hit when they go for a second consecutive win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday afternoon. Gilbert went 0-for-4 in his big league debut Friday night as a large contingent of family and friends cheered for him from behind the third base dugout at Oracle Park. The 24-year-old Gilbert, summoned from Triple-A before Friday's contest, became the fourth different right fielder employed by the Giants in seven games since they dealt Mike Yastrzemski to the Kansas City Royals at the trade deadline last week.

NYY8/9 4:00 AM Cody Bellinger (OF/1B/DH-NYY) Yankees Predicted to Lose Star Outfielder to Giants. The New York Yankees have found a star in outfielder Cody Bellinger, and to this point, the centerfielder has made the team's trade worth it. Bellinger is set to hit the open market after the 2025 season, potentially ending his time with the Yankees. New York has quickly welcomed him into their star-studded lineup, and he's soared, becoming one of their best players this season. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller believes Bellinger is on his way out, predicting he's headed to the National League with the San Francisco Giants.

MIL8/9 3:59 AM Blake Perkins (OF-MIL) Mets have tying run thrown out at the plate for final out. Center fielder Blake Perkins threw out Starling Marte at the plate to end the game as the surging Milwaukee Brewers hung on to defeat the slumping New York Mets 3-2 on Friday night. Brice Turang hit a two-run homer for the Brewers, who improved to a major league-best 71-44 by earning their seventh consecutive victory in front of a season-high crowd of 43,469. Marte and Juan Soto went deep for the Mets, who have lost five straight and nine of 10. After Marte doubled on an 0-2 pitch from Trevor Megill with two outs in the ninth inning, Jeff McNeil singled to center.

TOR8/9 3:50 AM Max Scherzer (P-TOR) Scherzer and Kershaw square off in rare duel of 3,000-strikeout club members. Max Scherzer and Clayton Kershaw went toe-to-toe for six innings in a vintage duel Friday night. The 41-year-old Scherzer, pitching for Toronto, made his 465th career start. Kershaw, 37, started his 443rd game — all for the Los Angeles Dodgers over 18 seasons. Once teammates in Los Angeles, both pitchers have won three Cy Young Awards and are likely headed to the Hall of Fame. Kershaw allowed one run and seven hits, striking out four. Scherzer gave up two runs and six hits, striking out five. A two-run homer by Mookie Betts gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. It was the fourth time Scherzer and Kershaw faced each other. Before the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised both pitchers for their competitiveness and unique styles.

CHC8/9 3:31 AM Matthew Boyd (P-CHC) Michael Busch, Cubs Offense Falls Short In Shutout Loss To Cardinals. The Chicago Cubs fell to the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-0, in a series-opening contest Friday night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The Cubs (66-49) were done in by an offense that, yet again, was unable to take advantage of opportunities with runners in scoring position. The Cardinals (59-58) nibbled around the edges for runs against Chicago starter Matthew Boyd, who did enough to keep the Cubs in the game, had the offense been able to score.
