Wilyer Abreu wasn't supposed to be in the lineup for the Boston Red Sox with a left-handed starter on the mound for the Kansas City Royals. Less than half an hour before the scheduled first pitch, Abreu was inserted into the lineup when Roman Anthony was scratched with back tightness. Abreu finished the game 2-3 with an RBI. In the seventh inning, he hit a hard line drive single to drive in the team's eighth run of the night.

Jarren Duran hit a three-run home run and the Boston Red Sox extended their winning streak to six games by beating the visiting Kansas City Royals 8-5 Monday night. Duran's home run, his 12th of the season, came against Royals starting pitcher Bailey Falter (7-6), who was making his Kansas City debut after being acquired from Pittsburgh. Falter gave up seven runs on eight hits in four innings.

Schwarber finished with six RBIs, running his major league-leading total to 94 on the season. The Phillies increased their NL East lead to 1 1/2 games over the Mets, who lost 7-6 to the Guardians in 10 innings. Schwarber's first homer of the game was a two-run shot deep into the second deck that tied it at 3 in the third. He heard “MVP! MVP!” chants when he came to the plate in the sixth. Schwarber, the All-Star Game MVP, launched his NL-best 40th of the season

Jack Suwinski hit a two-run homer and later scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the host Pittsburgh Pirates rallied for a 5-4 walk-off victory over the San Francisco Giants on Monday. Suwinski raced home on a grounder up the first base line by Isiah Kiner-Falefa and slid under the tag of Giants catcher Patrick Bailey to help the Pirates complete a ninth-inning comeback and register their seventh win in nine games.

Randy Rodríguez blew his first save since being elevated to the closer role, allowing two runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Giants fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 on Monday night at PNC Park. Rodríguez began the bottom of the ninth inning by walking Andrew McCutchen, and the Pirates sent in Alexander Canario to pinch-run. Rodriguez then plunked Jack Suwinski, giving the Pirates runners on first and second with one out.

Quinn Priester threw seven quality innings and Isaac Collins hit a three-run home run to propel the visiting Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday. Priester (11-2) won his fifth consecutive start, allowing just one run on two hits, while striking out four and walking two. The Brewers mustered just three hits, but Collins' 376-foot homer to right field was enough to help the club post its seventh win in eight tries. In the ninth, closer Trevor Megill needed just seven pitches to retire the Braves in order, picking up his 25th save.

Alexander picked up his second win of the season after holding Miami to three hits. The Astros built a 5-0 lead during a disastrous fourth by Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (6-10), who was perfect his first time through the Houston order before giving up six hits in the inning.
