Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered and Luis Gil pitched one-run ball over 5 1/3 innings to help the New York Yankees beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Friday night. Gil (1-1) allowed one run on four hits and three walks and had four strikeouts in his third start of the season. David Bednar pitched a scoreless ninth for his 19th save of the season and second for the Yankees.

There have been a lot of long nights during this Colorado Rockies season, the kind when even the most optimistic folks would have trouble finding positives. Starting pitcher Tanner Gordon shook off a recent funk with a solid outing, and several Rockies hitters played key roles in a 4-3 victory on Friday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Coors Field. Gordon's previous three starts were a disaster, with 24 runs (23 earned) allowed in 10 1/3 innings. Gordon did put the first two runners on to start the sixth inning, and that was the end of his outing.

Jhoan Dura´n, one of the prized acquisitions at Major League Baseball's trade deadline and the much-needed closer for the Philadelphia Phillies, was struck by a batted ball on his right ankle and taken off the field on a bullpen cart in the ninth inning of their Aug. 15 game. Dura´n, entering with a 6-2 lead against the Washington Nationals, took a one-hopper off the bat of the Nationals' Paul DeJong – exit velocity, 94.1 mph – and tried to retrieve the ball as it bounced toward the first base line.

The San Francisco Giants moved third baseman Matt Chapman to the 10-day injured list after he struggled to regain full strength from a right-hand injury. Chapman initially hurt his hand on June 8 while diving back to first base against the Houston Astros, an injury that sidelined him for 23 games earlier this season. Since his reinstatement, Chapman appeared in 31 games but batted just .200 with a .655 OPS, hitting four home runs. This slump coincides with broader team struggles as the Giants have scored only 1.8 runs per game over a 14-game stretch since July 12 and are hitting a mere .146 with runners in scoring position during that span.

Alejandro Kirk followed a two-run homer in the seventh inning with a game-winning two-run single in the eighth to push the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-5 comeback win in the series opener against the Texas Rangers on Friday. Kirk's single with the bases loaded allowed the Blue Jays (72-51) to overcome a three-run deficit. Before Kirk's deciding at-bat, Texas reliever Phil Matton (2-5) walked Daulton Varsho with the bases loaded to pull the home team within two runs before 42,260 at Rogers Centre.

August 16 - Trevor Story's single in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in Roman Anthony for the game-winning run as the Boston Red Sox beat the visiting Miami Marlins 2-1 on Friday night. Miami's Josh Simpson came on to pitch the ninth and loaded the bases with no outs by walking Anthony and Alex Bregman and then hitting Jarren Duran with a pitch. Story's game-winning hit came against Calvin Faucher, who replaced Simpson (2-2) after the Duran hit-by-pitch. Story had two of Boston's three hits in the game. Aroldis Chapman (4-2) earned the victory by tossing a scoreless ninth. Boston starter Lucas Giolito was pulled with one out in the seventh. He gave up a run on seven hits, including five
