Shohei Ohtani hit his 40th home run of the season Saturday night in the fifth inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The two-way Japanese star reached 40 homes for the fourth time in his career, after winning MVP awards in each of the previous three years he did it. Ohtani hit a solo shot 417 feet to center off starter Chris Bassitt to give the Dodgers a three-run lead.

On Saturday, the Athletics announced that they placed right-handed starter Luis Severino on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain. Severino's last outing came on August 5 against the Washington Nationals, during which he allowed three earned runs over six innings while notching five strikeouts. The Athletics signed Severino to a three-year, $67 million deal in the offseason.

Pete Alonso has hit his 252nd career home run, tying the New York Mets record held by Darryl Strawberry for 37 years. Alonso connected against Milwaukee Brewers starter Tobias Myers leading off the second inning Saturday night for his 26th homer this season, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. It was Alonso’s fourth homer in eight games, since he went deep Aug. 1 against San Francisco to end an 0-for-19 slump. A homegrown star who was drafted by the Mets in 2016, Alonso broke into the big leagues with a bang in 2019, hitting 53 home runs to set a major league rookie record and establish a franchise high for a single season.

Although it's a different level, the Mets' stretch of dominance has only continued with Carson Benge's big week in Double-A. Over the past couple of weeks, he's been one of the hottest hitters on the planet, which translated to a decent jump on our top 100. Last week, Benge blasted two homers while posting an OPS of 1.476, continuing his great start at Double-A. Since being promoted, Benge has recorded a 227 wRC+ with eight of his twelve homers being hit at the level.
