In the top of the eigth inning with the Bronx Bombers down 10-9, the 24-year-old shortstop launched a 421-foot solo home run to left field off Marlins right-hander Lake Bachar to tie the contest. During the ninth, Volpe followed up Ryan McMahon's go-ahead RBI single with a run-scoring double to center field that extended New York's lead to 12-10.

8/2 2:00 PM Michael King (P-SD) Padres Make Massive Michael King Announcement Hinting at Impending Return. The San Diego Padres announced starting pitcher Michael King will take a significant step towards his return to the rotation, as he will make a rehab start for Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. King landed on the injured list May 25 after being scratched from his May 24 start against the Atlanta Braves with right shoulder inflammation, though was later diagnosed with a pinched nerve. The Padres made two additions to their rotation at the trade deadline in JP Sears and Nestor Cortes, and King will be another solid addition to their arsenal. Before his injury, King had performed at an even better level than last year, where he placed seventh in NL Cy Young voting.

8/2 1:41 PM Zack Kelly (P-BOS) Red Sox make 3 roster moves with bullpen as Justin Slaten takes big step toward returning. The Red Sox completed some housekeeping with their roster before Saturday's game, updating the status of three relievers. Boston activated righties Zack Kelly and Nick Burdi from the injured list and optioned them both to Triple-A Worcester, where they were both already rehabbing. Because Burdi was on the 60-day IL, the Sox needed a 40-man spot for him and cleared that by moving fellow righty Luis Guerrero to the 60-day IL. Kelly had been out since June 30 with a right oblique strain and originally had his option voided in favor of an injured list stint once further tests revealed the injury.
