4/28/25 Yankees Devin Williams offers 4-word response to losing closer role. The New York Yankees are off to a strong start behind a new-look roster for 2025, though some additions haven't panned out as hoped. Free agent signing Max Fried has been even better than expected, posting a 1.43 ERA across five wins in his first six starts. Then there is Cody Bellinger, who arrived via trade from the Chicago Cubs to the tune of a -0.1 WAR so far. After three straight sub-2.00 ERA seasons, Williams has been hit for a 11.25 ERA in his first eight innings with the Yankees, prompting manager Aaron Boone to remove him from the closer role before the team's Sunday matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays.

4/27/25 Yankees win first game of doubleheader against Blue Jays, 11-2. Max Fried won his fifth straight start, Austin Wells capped a six-run third inning with a three-run double off suddenly wild Kevin Gausman and the Yankees routed the Toronto Blue Jays 11-2 on Sunday in a doubleheader opener.

4/27/25 Yankees' Max Fried making New York pitcher history with start to NYY career. Max Fried signed with the New York Yankees this offseason for $215 million. That's the kind of deal that can bring a pitcher to the Bronx with a lot of hype. Some players can't handle the pressure in the Big Apple. No such issues for Fried, though. Through five starts, Fried is 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA. He has struck out 30 batters in 31.2 innings. He's the fifth pitcher in the storied franchise's history to record at least four wins and have a sub-1.50 ERA in his first five appearances with the Yankees. That's been of extra importance to New York given the injury woes that have befallen their starting rotation. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Gerrit Cole is out for the year, and Luis Gil is

4/27/25 As Devin Williams struggles, Yankees unsure of closer heading into DH with Jays. If there is a save situation, who gets the chance for the New York Yankees will be a big storyline. The Toronto Blue Jays hope there won't be any save opportunities for the Yankees on Sunday afternoon when the American League East rivals play a doubleheader in New York. Left-hander Max Fried (4-0, 1.42 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener for the Yankees and oppose right-hander Kevin Gausman (2-2, 3.16).

4/26/25 Blue Jays-Yankees game called off because of rain, teams will play doubleheader on Sunday. Saturday's game between the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees was postponed because of heavy rain and the forecast of sustained inclement weather. The postponement was announced about 3 1/2 hours before Saturday's original first pitch and will be made up as part of a straight doubleheader on Sunday. Max Fried will oppose Toronto's Kevin Gausman on Sunday in the first game. The original pitching matchup for Sunday — Clarke Schmidt against Toronto's Chris Bassitt — will go in the second game.

4/26/25 Yankees' closer role could be flux amid Blue Jays series. While Max Fried's first month with the New York Yankees is going well, Devin Williams is experiencing a rough time in his initial weeks for his new team. Fried will be on the mound Saturday afternoon when the Yankees host the Toronto Blue Jays. Now, if there is a save situation for New York, whoever is on the mound in the ninth inning will be a storyline. The Yankees are 1-3 in their past four games, and they took a 4-2 loss on Friday when Williams did not retire a batter and allowed a go-ahead two-run double to Alejandro Kirk in the ninth.

4/23/25 JAY DUNN: Official scorer was right to reverse call that took no-hitter away from Yankees' Max Fried. When Max Fried returned to the Yankees dugout following the seventh inning of Sunday's game, he and his teammates followed the time-honored ritual. Fried was the starting pitcher and he had worked seven scoreless innings. Saying “no-hitter” out loud would be considered a jinx. Fried was about to become the first pitcher in history to lose a no-hit bid while sitting in the dugout.

4/21/25 Fried's no-hit bid ended by retro scoring change. New York Yankees veteran left-hander Max Fried lost a no-hit bid in Sunday's 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays just as the bottom of the eighth inning was about to start when the official scorer changed a sixth-inning call to a hit from an error.

4/21/25 Yankees could be perfect trade suitor for $56 million All-Star. The New York Yankees have gotten through the first month of the season by the skin of their teeth, dealing with injuries to the starting rotation. Outside of lefty Max Fried, New York has gotten inconsistent results from the rest of the pitching staff. Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly recently listed Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara as one of the players most likely to be dealt at the Major League Baseball trade deadline.

4/20/25 Yankees' Max Fried has no-hit bid through 6 inning against Rays. Yankees left-hander Max Fried has not allowed a hit through six innings against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, and New York leads 3-0. Fried, a 31-year-old left-hander in his first season with the Yankees, walked two and faced two batters over the minimum. Three Rays have reached base on errors in a game at Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees' spring training home. The Yankees made two defensive gems to keep Tampa Bay hitless.

4/19/25 Yankees trade idea brings surprise reunion with $5 million World Series champion. The New York Yankees are doing a good job calming fans' nerves about the starting rotation during their current five-game winning streak. Starting pitching has been the biggest source of drama during this Yankees season, and the recent wins haven't necessarily proved New York has the right formula. Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt will remain in the rotation if healthy, but the rest is a bit of a question mark. The Yankees don't need to panic and make a move right away, but at some point this season, a trade for another starting pitcher almost seems inevitable.

4/18/25 New York Yankees Provide Positive Update on Injured Veteran Working Toward Return. The New York Yankees have been hit hard by the injury bug early in the season, but they have done a good job navigating the loss of so much production from their lineup and pitching staff. Outside of Max Fried, the starting rotation has provided next to nothing production wise with an elevated ERA. The Yankees are hopeful that things will pick up in the near future with Clarke Schmidt returning to the mix earlier this week.

4/18/25 Yankees' Max Fried is a two-way success story: Low ERA, high IQ. Every time I see Max Fried doing recon on an opposing hitter, I think of one of the many iconic scenes from the 1984 movie, The Terminator. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the soulless android from the future, uses mathematical calculations before deciding how to destroy his prey. The lefthander is the Yankees' most cerebral pitcher this side of Gerrit Cole, one of many reasons Aaron Boone hasn't had to worry about an ace. It's not just that Fried throws seven different pitches, all of which are elite level.

4/17/25 MLB writer makes concerning declaration about Yankees farm system. Never ones to settle for a bridge year, the New York Yankees once again pushed all their chips into the middle of the table this past winter. The biggest splash was the signing of left-handed ace Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million deal, but the Yankees also ate the last two years of Cody Bellinger's salary and traded highly regarded infield prospect Caleb Durbin to the Milwaukee Brewers for one year of closer Devin Williams. The final touch was signing 37-year-old first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in the hopes that they could squeeze one more productive season out of the former Most Valuable Player Award winner. Nobody could fault the Yankees for trying to maximize the prime of generational superstar Aaron Judge, and many Yankees fans would argue they didn't add enough to their $308 million payroll.

The Yankees bashed four home runs to beat the Kansas City Royals, 4-1 , in Monday night's series-opener. The Bombers lead the league with 32 homers and a .501 slugging percentage, but their over-reliance on the long ball could be cause for concern down the line. It seems that the formula is pretty simple. If the Yankees go deep, they win. If they're held in the park, they lose. The Bombers are a -205 favorite against the Royals on Tuesday night, with Max Fried set to take on Kansas City's Michael Wacha. Explore More Bet365 bonus code

4/11/25 Yankees urged to pursue 'expensive trade target' from Padres despite 7.98 ERA. It became clear this week that no, the New York Yankees aren't going to hit nine home runs in every series they play, which makes starting pitching all the more important. Starting pitching has been a mixed bag, with the high point coming in Max Fried's dominant outing on Thursday. Ever since losing ace Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery, it was clear the Yankees' rotation depth was thin.
