9/25/24 | Astros could target former MVP to fill first base void this winter. The Houston Astros are once again the kings of the American League West. Jose Abreu didn't pan out, and Jon Singleton hasn't been any better. When the season comes to an end, there will be plenty of first base options available in free agency, including Texas native Paul Goldschmidt. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch noted that if the St. Louis Cardinals cannot re-sign him, Houston could be a fit. Source: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/news/astros-co... |
9/13/24 | Houston Astros Former Embattled Top Prospect Could Become Their Missing Link. With 16 games left in the regular season, it's looking like the Houston Astros will complete their comeback after they were last place in the AL West at one point this year. Once Houston gets in, they are a team nobody wants to face. Perhaps the biggest one is at first base. When Jose Abreu drastically underperformed to the point where the organization felt it was in everyone's best interest to cut him, that left a huge hole at that position that hasn't quite been filled. 7/23/24 | MLB Insider Links Houston Astros to Trade for All-Star First Baseman. The Houston Astros are heading towards the MLB trade deadline in just over a week with a couple of major needs. One of them is starting pitching and the other is at first base. Earlier this season, the Astros chose to move on from Jose Abreu after a brutal start to the year. Since that move was made, they have been suggested as a team that could swing big at the trade deadline to acquire a first baseman. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/astros/news/mlb-insider-lin... |
7/09/24 | Houston Astros Again Linked to Superstar First Baseman Trade. Over the past few weeks, the Houston Astros have been mentioned a lot in trade rumors. As the team has been rebounding their 2024 season and getting back into contention, they are starting to be viewed as a team that could look to pull off a big deal. If they do decide to pursue a big trade, it seems likely that first base would be a position they target. Jose Abreu played first base for a big chunk of the year, but the Astros parted ways with him due to massive struggles. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/astros/news/houston-astros-... |
6/19/24 | Insider Suggests Astros' Initial Whiff On Jose Abreu Sparked Massive Mistake. Rewind back to the offseason following the Houston Astros' second World Series title in 2022. When they handed 2020 AL MVP Jose Abreu a then-free agent franchise record $58.5 million over three years, it was thought this team might truly have no weaknesses. Not only did they just add another power bat to their already prolific lineup, but they replaced their departing first baseman Yuli Gurriel. Following the Astros' surprising release of the veteran, they will still owe him more than $30 million for him not to play for this franchise. 6/18/24 | The Astros just ate about $30 million to ditch a struggling veteran. Would the Tigers do the same?. The Houston Astros, somewhat reluctantly, said goodbye to first baseman Jose Abreu over the weekend. The farewell included a parting gift of more than $30 million to escape the three-year, $58.5 million contract signed before the 2023 season. Before his signing, Abreu had been one of the best first basemen in baseball for a decade. The 37-year-old was trying desperately to turn things around, even accepting a voluntary assignment to the minor leagues earlier this year. 6/15/24 | Spencer Arrighetti, Astros take aim at Tigers. Following the release of veteran first baseman Jose Abreu earlier on Friday, the Houston Astros needed a positive development, something that actually resembled the win they mustered later that evening. The Astros blanked the visiting Detroit Tigers 4-0 in the opener of a three-game weekend series that continues on Saturday afternoon. Houston won after cutting ties with Abreu less than halfway through the three-year, $58.5 million contract he signed before last season. Abreu, 37, was a respected figure in the Houston clubhouse, but his prolonged struggles -- he hit .124 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 35 games -- made his release inevitable. Players struggle across Major League Baseball for different reasons, something the Houston Astros are dealing with right now to a few of their high-profile players. The Astros were hoping some time in Florida for Jose Abreu would help him figure some things out and return to being someone who looked even remotely like he had won an MVP award in the past. Ryan Pressly doesn't have the luxury of getting time away amid his struggles. Jeff Passan of ESPN reported the Toronto Blue Jays shipped out Cavan Biggio to the National League powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers following designating him for assignment last week. 6/01/24 | What Should The Houston Astros Do About Their First Base Problem?. A position that they have invested a lot in, the Astros have gotten virtually nothing from it. Before 2023, Houston brought in Jose Abreu on a three year $58.5 million deal. Instead, he had the worst season of his career, with career lows in batting average (.237), OPS (.680) and OPS+ (87). 5/31/24 | Houston Astros Skipper Makes Interesting Comments About Slumping Slugger. The Houston Astros need to go on a run. It looked like they had finally started piecing things together in mid-May when they made a charge up the AL West standings, but they have fizzled out almost as quickly as the hot stretch came. Ideally for the Astros, that spark will come from their veteran slugger Jose Abreu. After signing a three-year, $58.5 million contract with Houston in 2022, things have not gone well for the 2020 American League MVP. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/astros/news/houston-astros-... |
5/28/24 | Jose Abreu's return from Astros demotion brings batting average over .100. When the Houston Astros signed Jose Abreu to a three-year, $58.5 million contract in November 2022, they were hoping he would add significant pop to their lineup. After all, he had been one of the American League's better hitters for years. After a miserable debut campaign with the Astros in 2023, Abreu has been even worse this season, and it ultimately resulted in his demotion to Houston's spring training site in West Palm Beach at the beginning of May. Abreu was then sent to Triple-A Sugar Land last Friday, and in two games with the Astros' minor-league affiliate, he went 0-for-7 with three strikeouts. 5/27/24 | Astros' Jose Abreu in 'good spot' ahead of opener vs. Mariners. The Houston Astros expect to have a familiar face back in the clubhouse when they open a four-game series Monday at Seattle.
