Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Oneil Cruz is turning heads across Major League Baseball with a red-hot start to the season, putting himself on pace for a historic achievement. If Cruz maintains this torrid pace over the remaining 121 games — accounting for his current rate of playing time — he would finish the season with an eye-popping 44 home runs and 69 stolen bases. If Cruz keeps this pace, his numbers that would place him in one of baseball's most exclusive fraternities: the 40/40 club. Only six players in MLB history have ever achieved the feat of 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season, with Shohei Ohtani being the most recent in 2024.

4/24/25 Pirates Blow Lead, Drop Series Finale to Angels. The Pittsburgh Pirates took an early lead, but failed to hold on, losing 4-3 to the Los Angeles Angels at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. The Pirates won the first two games of the series, 9-3 on April 22 and 3-0 on April 23, meaning they missed the chance for their first sweep of the season. Center fielder Oneil Cruz began the game with a leadoff home run, crushing a ball into right field, giving the Pirates an immediate 1-0 lead. Right fielder Bryan Reynolds grounded out after Cruz, but designated hitter Andrew McCutchen hit a deep shot that Angels center fielder Jo Adell just missed with his glove, allowing McCutchen to get in for a double.

Cruz hit a grand slam in Wednesday's 6-1 win and has four home runs this season. The Pittsburgh Pirates have been far and away the most dangerous team on the basepaths this season, with two main players leading the way. Entering Tuesday's contest against the Tampa Bay Rays, center fielder Oneil Cruz led all of MLB with five stolen bases. According to OptaSTATS, Cruz and Kiner-Falefa are the first pair of teammates in MLB's modern era to combine for at least nine stolen bases and 10 walks in their team's first five games of a season.
