11/06/20 Weighing J.T. Realmuto's free-agent value against the aging curve of catchers. The Phillies and every other team that is interested in Realmuto are asking that question. Because everyone understands the price tag. Arguably the valedictorian of this free-agent class, Realmuto wants to raise the bar for catchers, which means beating Joe Mauer's $23 million annual salary from 2011 to 2018.

7/06/20 Torkelson impresses during Tigers weekend practices. DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - Spencer Torkelson, who was the first overall pick in the Major League Baseball Draft last month, put on a batting practice show for the Detroit Tigers over the weekend at Comerica Park. 6/18/20 All-Time Twins Tournament, Puckett Round, Day 7: Nobody wants to lose. But in the end, only one team could advance, and after a series of lead changes and ties, ‘69 moved on to the Joe Mauer round, ousting ‘19 by a 6-5 margin. Though neither team’s offense produced any high-scoring innings, starters Jake Odorizzi and Jim Kaat both were scathed by the opposition’s lineup, neither of which left a deficit untouched for long. opened the scoring in the first, loading the bases with one out and watching Tony Oliva cross the plate on a passed ball.

6/10/20 Gophers pitcher Max Meyer selected third in MLB draft by Miami Marlins. Meyer, a junior right-hander from Woodbury, was selected third overall by the Miami Marlins; he tied Paul Molitor for the highest pick ever for a Gophers player. Molitor also went third to the Brewers in 1977; fellow U player Dave Winfield was taken fourth by the Padres in 1973; and Joe Mauer skipped college to go first overall to the Twins in 2001.

6/07/20 Want your team to have the No. 1 pick in the MLB draft? You may want to rethink that. It's too soon to tell if last year's top pick, Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman, is more Chilcott than Joe Mauer, who carved out a case for the Hall of Fame from behind the plate after being taken with the first pick in 2001. Likewise with the first-rounders from 2016-18, most of whom are still working through the minors. 5/16/20 Saturday Rockpile: Bench coach Mike Redmond talks catcher safety—in brand new ways. I’ve never spit anywhere else in my life, except on a baseball field. This article by the Minneapolis Star Tribune features several catchers with ties to Minnesota. It includes Redmond as well as Joe Mauer, his teammate with the Twins for six seasons.
