Atlanta's in the rare position of having a fully locked in position player core, with all eight defensive starters under team control for multiple seasons after this one. But their first opening, coming in 2026, is at shortstop, where incumbent Orlando Arcia will be entering his age 31 season. Atlanta's holds a club option on him that would cost only

If you think about it, that makes sense. The Braves have every defensive position on the diamond locked up long-term, with the first starter to hit free agency slated to be shortstop Orlando Arcia after the 2026 season, assuming his club option for 2025 is picked up. But there's still a need to develop impact position players in the minor leagues, to both supplement the depth

4/01/24 What I Like: Orlando Arcia, Oswaldo Cabrera, And Michael Conforto. Hey hey! We have actual, stat-accruing baseball happening now through November. Finally, the calendar feels like it's real, and not some Sophon-induced San-ti delusion. Wait, is that the countdown to the end of my season flashing through my head? No worries -- we've got 6 months! My role in 2024 has shifted away from pitching and is now focused on hitting. I'll cover pitchers as well as their stats become more interesting down the line. But we are in serious small sample size territory right now.

The first position player opening amongst the starting eight won't come until 2026 , when shortstop Orlando Arcia reaches free agency, and even he has a club option for that season that could push it until 2027. And if you think about it, that makes sense. The position on the field with the least team control is shortstop, where Atlanta "only" has three contractual years of Orlando Arcia. But despite the obvious need to focus on pitching prospects, the Braves have also selectively invested in position players where they think they can find difference makers,

Playing in the Venezuelan Winter League for Leones del Caracas, Arcia's been wearing an "ear flap" helmet, with an additional piece of protective armor that extends down the left side of his face. And that's a good thing. Facing Navegantes del Magallanes with a 7-0 lead in the 8th inning of Wednesday night's matchup, Arcia ended up wearing a fastball right to that
