5/14/24 Yankees' Clay Holmes (0.00 ERA!) has become MLB's best closer. Covered the Washington Wizards from 2014 to 2016 and the Washington Nationals from 2016 to 2018 for The Washington Post before covering the Los Angeles Dodgers and MLB for the Los Angeles Times from 2018 to 2024. The New York Yankees' bullpen, after posting the lowest ERA in the majors in 2023, is a very different group this season.

5/10/24 Yankees' Clay Holmes hangs on for save despite lack of control. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — On the way to throwing 17 ¹/3 innings without allowing an earned run this season, Clay Holmes has often been downright dominant. That was not the case Friday night, but the Yankees closer lived to tell about it. Holmes lost his sinker command but not the game, leaving the bases loaded to finish off a 2-0 win over the Rays at Tropicana Field . Mariano Rivera left probably the biggest shoes in Yankees franchise history to fill. Parents told their children about Mariano Rivera's outings. Pitchers of all levels study his mechanics like it's scripture in hopes of replicating his results. Hitters knew the exact pitch that he was going to throw, and there was nothing they could do about it. Rarely did Mo give anyone the opportunity to get the better of him, because his outs came and went like clockwork. It plays into the “Yankee fans are spoiled” stereotype because they got used to his “ol' reliable” cutter. It has been over

5/05/24 Yankees' new-look bullpen proving doubters wrong, picking up where they left off. Clay Holmes leads the American League with 11 saves. He still hasn't allowed an earned run through 16 outings to start the season. AP By Max Goodman | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com NEW YORK — Fixing the Yankees ' offense was understandably at the top of the organization's to-do list heading into this past offseason. That meant widespread turnover in the bullpen — the only consistent and effective position group from last year's disappointing campaign — was poised to fly under the radar when assessing the Yankees' winter. 5/02/24 Clay Holmes picks up big five-out save in Yankees' victory. BALTIMORE — Five days after Aaron Boone declined to ask Clay Holmes to try for a six-out save , he asked for five. The Yankees closer answered the call. With the Yankees clinging to a two-run lead in the eighth inning and the Orioles threatening to rally, Holmes came in and secured a dominant five-out save to finish off a 2-0 win on Wednesday night at Camden Yards. 4/26/24 Yankees All-Star Sounds Like He Could Leave Team Despite Red-Hot Start. Yankees All-Star Sounds Like He Could Leave Team Despite Red-Hot Start New York could lose one of its All-Stars in the not-so-distant future Author: Patrick McAvoy Apr 26, 2024 In this story: New York Yankees MLB News The New York Yankees could end up losing one of their top pitchers next offseason. New York has had one of the best bullpens in baseball over the last few seasons and one of the biggest reasons why has been the success of closer Clay Holmes. He may not have the biggest name in the world, but he has become a star since joining the Yankees. While this is the case, he could end up leaving the team in free agency as New York hasn't started discussing a contract extension with him, according

4/25/24 Yankees Notebook: Clay Holmes looks as 'polished' as ever, Michael Tonkin claimed off waivers. When the Yankees first acquired Clay Holmes from the Pirates midway through the 2021 season, the trade didn't receive much fanfare. The long grind of an MLB season requires depth moves, and Holmes appeared to be nothing more. Fast forward to present day and Holmes has established himself as one of baseball's most reliable closers, a job he seized from Aroldis Chapman during the 2022 season. An All-Star that year, Holmes entered Thursday's series finale against the A's with a 2.32 ERA and 53 saves over 165 games with the Yankees.

4/20/24 Yankees' Clay Holmes will scare you to death, then save the day. Yankees closer Clay Holmes earned his major league-leading eighth save on Friday night after once again pitching his way into and out of ninth-inning trouble. AP By Randy Miller | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com NEW YORK — Clay Holmes craves the same thing Yankees fans desire when it's the time to win a close game. He'd love to come in for the ninth with a lead, throw some nasty sinkers, get three groundballs and pick up a save. The Yankees closer has most of that down pat. 4/17/24 Yankees avoid sweep with Aaron Judge's tiebreaking single in ninth inning. Victor González (1-0) got one out for the win and Clay Holmes finished for his seventh save in eight chances. Judge was 0 for 12 against Toronto in the series before coming through on a full-count pitch from lefthander Tim Mayza with two outs and the bases loaded. The Yankees trailed 4-1 through seven innings, but Soto homered off Génesis Cabrera in the eighth and Stanton connected off Erik Swanson (0-1) to begin the ninth. Swanson was activated from the injured list Tuesday after being sidelined because of a sore forearm.

3/05/24 Clay Holmes isn't letting Yankees contract uncertainty distract him from ultimate prize. Dressed in a camouflage button down with pristine white shoes sticking out from under his slacks, Yankees closer Clay Holmes took questions from three reporters in the visiting clubhouse at Clover Park on Tuesday afternoon. Like his spotless inning of work in a 5-4 loss to the Mets — a smooth first outing of the spring — Holmes was efficient as he swiftly retired the side. Asked about the strength of the Yankees' bullpen after the departures of Wandy Peralta and Michael King, Holmes didn't skip a beat. Between the familiar faces, newbies and non-roster invitees at camp this spring, Holmes has no doubt that the league's best bullpen from a year ago can reestablish that same dominance.

10/25/23 Today on Pinstripe Alley. It went the distance, but we finally have the two teams competing in the Fall Classic for 2023: the Texas Rangers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Personally, this is the first World Series that I can remember watching with next to no rooting interest going in, so it'll be interesting to see who can outperform the other and claim the Commissioner's Trophy. Unfortunately, this does mean we'll finally have a short break from baseball before the World Series kicks off. Josh delivers No. 98 on our Top 100 Yankees list, and Alex has a report card for Clay Holmes and his adventurous season.

8/23/23 Hal Steinbrenner must demand brutal Yankees assessment from Brian Cashman. More From: Joel Sherman The Yankees' Clay Holmes dilemma — as written before his meltdown Francisco Alvarez, Kodai Senga's strong rookie years present Mets with key decisions Mets, Yankees should learn from Braves' blueprint as MLB outliers Pete Alonso's Mets future complicated amid large gap in valuation Yankees' inability to weather storm leaves them far behind MLB peers I understand all the screaming for Brian Cashman to be fired. A strong case could now be made that his baseball operations department has gone stale, lost its feel and it is time after a quarter-of-a-century in charge to change the top voice and the direction. But this is not open for a public vote. This is a dictatorship,

8/14/23 Yankees Rivalry Roundup: Mullins carries the O's, Ohtani downs the 'Stros. In a season full of low lights, the Yankees may found a way to top themselves with perhaps their worst loss of the year in Miami on Sunday. You'd be forgiven for not wanting much to do with baseball after watching Clay Holmes immolate in the ninth inning against the Marlins, and if you did, you missed some other, less infuriating action across the AL. For those who have the stomach, let's go through the games from the Yankees' nominal rivals. Making just his third start since returning from Tommy John surgery, Hyun-Jin Ryu looked shaky out of the blocks.

7/23/23 Key Yankees reliever could lose bullpen spot if struggles continue. With reliever Jonathan Loáisiga beginning to throw against live hitters, scheduled to pitch in a rehab assignment next weekend, the Yankees need to start thinking of who they're going to take out of their bullpen when he's ready to return from the injured list. It won't be closer Clay Holmes or high-leverage arms Michael King, Wandy Peralta and Tommy Kahnle. Ian Hamilton figures to stick around for the duration after returning from the injured list not long ago, a breakout arm that was a non-roster invitee this spring.

6/15/23 Why the Yankees should (but won't) make a bid for Cubs' Marcus Stroman at MLB trade deadline. Over the next 47 days, before the trade deadline arrives on Aug. 1, the Yankees will determine what sort of pitching they'll need to add to their roster for the postseason push. For a while, it appeared they would need a proven closer, but Clay Holmes might have worked the kinks out of his delivery and is dominating like he did in the first half of last season, when he was named to the All-Star Game. If Holmes can reclaim the closer's role he lost, the Yankees could switch their attention to the rotation. Stroman, 32, is in the second year of a three-year, $71 million contract with the Cubs, and he wants more money and security.

6/14/23 Scherzer tagged, Smith ejected as Yankees rally past Mets 7-6 in Subway Series opener. Clay Holmes pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and the New York Yankees stormed back from four runs down against Max Scherzer to beat the skidding New York Mets 7-6 in their Subway Series opener at Citi Field. Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu homered off Scherzer, and pinch-hitter Josh Donaldson drove in the tiebreaking run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth after Brandon Nimmo misplayed a ball in center field. Before the seventh, reliever Drew Smith became the second Mets pitcher to get ejected this season for using an illegal foreign substance. Nimmo hit his eighth career leadoff homer and Jeff McNeil had a two-run single for the Mets, who have lost nine of 10.
