5/13/24 MLB power rankings: Cardinals back in NL Central basement. MLB MLB power rankings: Cardinals back in NL Central basement - and on track for dubious mark Gabe Lacques USA TODAY St. Louis Cardinals fans encountered a rare, welcome sight on Sunday: Ryan Helsley, on the mound, closing a game. And closing a wound, they hope. Helsley had not pitched in eight days, because closers on bad teams aren't really necessary, and make no mistake: The Cardinals have been a bad team. They came into Sunday on a seven-game losing streak that included dropping the first three games of a key series at Milwaukee. And while the 4-3 win salvaged the finale, the Cardinals have to worry how much damage has been done. St. Louis is 16-24, already eight games behind the Brewers

2/23/24 Bullpen competition set to heat up as Cardinals open spring schedule with split-squad games. From his vantage point at the back end of the Cardinals' bullpen, Ryan Helsley is eager to watch how the competition for jobs among the team's relief candidates plays out this spring. The competition – which likely will decide the final three relievers on the roster when the regular season begins – gets underway in earnest on Saturday with the Cardinals set to play split-squad games against the Marlins in Jupiter and the Mets in Port St. Lucie. It should be the most watched aspect of the team's spring training schedule. With five spots basically locked up, barring injuries, there are three openings for relievers and more than twice that number of candidates.

2/21/24 Building unity in crowded Cardinals’ bullpen is key to nailing down wins in 2024. “I think it feels good to know your teammates trust in you and believe in you and your manager believes in you to be out there,” closer Ryan Helsley said. “You want to help shorten the game.”

2/19/24 Ryan Helsley eyes return to All-star form after strong finish in 2023: Cardinals Extra. Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley treated the final month of the 2023 season as though it were an early start to 2024. Overall, Helsley's 2023 statistics don't sound an alarm. Opposing hitters barreled pitches from Helsley at a lower rate and with almost identical average exit velocity and hard-hit rates as during his 2022 All-Star campaign. Last season, opponents got to him for multiple runs four times before the end of May. Opposing hitters' on-base percentage climbed from .201 against Helsley in 2022 up to .274 last season.

Cardinals Sign All-Star Hurler To One-Year Deal, Avoiding Arbitration St. Louis is locked in on a key bullpen arm Author: Nate Hagerty Publish date: Jan 11, 2024 2:44 PM EST In this story: St. Louis Cardinals The St. Louis Cardinals' pitching staff was the main culprit behind the club's last-place National League Central finish last season. The organization has replenished the rotation and added relievers this winter to avoid repeating another tumultuous outcome in 2024. Meanwhile, the Cardinals have agreed to terms with a vital piece of the bullpen poised to have a big impact next season. 9/08/23 Big swings early and a rookie's nervy relief lift Cardinals to bold win against Reds. Before one team unloaded its bench and the other unloaded its bullpen, the Cardinals had already unloaded on the Cincinnati Reds' pitching enough to create a cushion that all of the roster histrionics could not change. Finishing with Ryan Helsley and peaking with the relief performance by rookie Matthew Liberatore, the Cardinals' bullpen shouldered the final 16 outs of Friday's game at Great American Ball Park. The relievers pitched the entire time with a lead, had it teetering on them only once, and then secured the 9-4 victory. In addition to complicating Cincinnati's push for a playoff spot, the Cardinals have a chance to win back-to-back series for the first time since mid-July and first back-to-back road series since mid-June.

The situation was amplified by the absence of one of their key pieces for the past two weeks. All-Star reliever Ryan Helsley was placed on the injury reserve retroactive to June 10th for an undiagnosed right forearm injury and we finally have a hint at when he may return. "Ryan Helsley is set to begin a throwing program by the end of the week. He'll require a significant

6/14/23 Cardinals' bullpen coughs up lead and offense falters in clutch spots in a 4-3 loss to Giants. Jun. 12—On the day the Cardinals put their All-Star closer Ryan Helsley on the injured list because of a strained right forearm, they watched a one-run lead slip away in the final third of the game as they dropped their third consecutive home contest on Monday night. The Cardinals' offense, needing one run to extend the game and two to win, couldn't scratch out a run in the final two innings as they lost their 16th one-run game of the season, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game series in front of an announced 40,886 at Busch Stadium on Monday night.

5/25/23 Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt launches two homers, Ryan Helsley holds fast for win in Cincinnati. May 23—CINCINNATI — At a ballpark where innings are known to go super sideways as homers go up, up and away, to walls both near and far, the Cardinals turned for a second consecutive day to their closer. Ryan Helsley leaned into a bases-loaded abyss — but did not blink. After walking two batters and bringing the winning run to the plate, Helsley got a groundout from No. 3 hitter Jonathan India to end the game and secure an 8-5 victory Tuesday against the Reds at Great American Ball Park. The Cardinals won for the 12th time in 16 games and inched ever closer to .500, but not before Cincinnati, who tagged Helsley with an extrainnings loss Monday night, teased doing it again in regulation.

4/26/23 Chicago Cubs fans will love the latest St. Louis Cardinals loss. It has been a disappointing start to the season for the Chicago Cubs National League Central rival, the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals are sitting in fourth place in the National League Central with a record of 9-15 and the focus has been on the struggle of their starting pitching. The Cardinals' 2023 season may have hit a new low on Tuesday night in their game against the San Francisco Giants. Entering the bottom of the ninth inning with a 4-2 lead over the Giants, Cardinals' closer Ryan Helsley suffered his third blown save on the season as he gave up the lead in dramatic fashion.

4/26/23 A closer on ice. An outfield in flux. Cardinals’ latest, deflating loss compounds concerns. Ryan Helsley, rarely used in recently because Cardinals so rarely had a lead, allows walk-off homer in 5-4 loss to Giants that underscores multiplying concerns.

4/25/23 Defensive miscues and a hanging Helsley slider doom Cardinals in walk-off loss. You know things are bad when even the Cardinals' triumphant comebacks are turning into devastating losses these days. Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley hung a slider in a dangerous spot. Sabol didn't miss it, sending it deep to center field to lift the Giants over the Cardinals, 5-4.

4/22/23 Call to the hall: Helsley 'honored' by NSU Hall of Fame Induction. Apr. 22—It was never the plan for Ryan Helsley to make the MLB. Out of high school, the Tahlequah native planned to get his degree and graduate from his hometown Northeastern State University. But little did he know, Helsley's career on the pitcher's mound would take off and just after two years he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth round of the 2015 draft.
