2/03/24 Another Yankees' bullpen target comes off market, landing with division rival. The Yankees' door to upgrade their bullpen via free agency is closing fast as relievers continue to fly off the shelves. Right-hander Phil Maton signed with the Rays on Saturday morning, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. This comes after ex-Yankees Wandy Peralta and Keynan Middleton both picked National League teams earlier in the week. Peralta agreed to a four-year deal with the Padres (worth $16.5 million) while Middleton signed with the Cardinals.

2/02/24 Yankees Could Sign Ex-Astros Hurler After Missing Out On Another Free Agent Target. Yankees Could Sign Ex-Astros Hurler After Missing Out On Another Free Agent Target It sounds like New York has to go back to the drawing board Author: Patrick McAvoy Publish date: Feb 2, 2024 9:05 AM EST In this story: New York Yankees Houston Astros Phil Maton Another rumored New York Yankees free-agent target now is off the board. New York has been looking to improve its bullpen lately but has missed out on multiple hurlers. The Yankees were linked to Héctor Neris, Wandy Peralta, and Keynan Middleton and it seemed like the club would land at least one or two of the trio. While this is the case, New York has struck out on all three. Neris landed with the Chicago Cubs, Peralta signed with the

1/31/24 Yankees Seen As Top Landing Spot For Ex-Astros Hurler After Strong Season. Yankees Seen As Top Landing Spot For Ex-Astros Hurler After Strong Season New York could end up landing one of the top remaining free-agent relievers Author: Patrick McAvoy Publish date: Jan 31, 2024 2:33 PM EST In this story: New York Yankees Houston Astros Phil Maton There are some very intriguing relievers still available in free agency. The free-agent reliever market has moved extremely slowly this offseason. Free agency in general has moved at a snail's pace, but the relief market has been exceptionally slow. The New York Yankees have been mentioned as one of the most active teams and are looking to improve their bullpen. New York has been linked to a handful of players but has missed

11/18/23 One Team May Have Eye on Astros Reliever. NL East Team May Have Eye on Astros Free Agent Reliever If the Houston Astros hope to keep Phil Maton, they may want to keep an eye on a certain team in the NL East. Author: Matthew Postins Publish date: Nov 18, 2023 8:15 PM EST In this story: Houston Astros If the Houston Astros are hoping to bring back their reliable reliever, Phil Maton, they should expect some competition. Since Maton arrived in 2021 with Yainer Diaz in a trade for Myles Straw, he's been one of the Astros' most reliable set-up met. With the Astros he is 8-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 162 appearances. He handled a high volume and helped the Astros win the 2022 World Series. He's 30 years old with 347 career innings and a 16-12 record.

10/31/23 Astros Connected to Flamethrowing Reliever. Astros Connected to Flamethrowing Reliever From Division Rivals The Houston Astros will likely have a different bullpen in 2024 and they have been connected to flamethrowing reliever currently on the Texas Rangers. Author: Brad Wakai Publish date: Oct 31, 2023 7:00 PM EDT In this story: Houston Astros There aren't many changes that the Houston Astros will make this offseason. Both their infield and outfield is loaded with talent and the starting rotation will get back injured players who missed last year. The unit that will have some new faces is their bullpen. Phil Maton and Ryne Stanek are scheduled to hit free agency when the offseason begins and Hector Neris could opt-out of his player-option.

7/24/23 Astros look for arms to match bats against Rangers. Houston right-hander Phil Maton, who earlier this season was as reliable as any high-leverage reliever, worked for the third time in four games on Monday. Bryan Abreu, Maton and Ryan Pressly, all of whom pitched Monday, have appeared in 49, 48 and 45 games, respectively.

7/04/23 Astros, needing to rest pitchers, face Rockies in day game. Astros manager Dusty Baker fired all of his bullpen bullets over the weekend in a tense four-game series with the American League West-leading Texas Rangers, a series that Houston won, but at a moderately high cost. The Astros opened a two-game interleague series against the visiting Colorado Rockies on Tuesday with four of their high-leverage relievers having pitched in three games at Texas: right-handers Phil Maton, Hector Neris, Bryan Abreu and Ryan Pressly.

6/04/23 Angels avoid sweep with Ohtani RBI double. Ohtani was hitless before clubbing a pitch from Phil Maton (0-1) off the wall in right field, driving in Gio Urshela for a 2-1 lead. The clutch swing gave Ohtani 41 RBIs on the season. “Just a really good at-bat understanding what the pitcher is trying to do," Angels manager Phil Nevin said. Luis Rengifo hit his third homer for Los Angeles, which stopped a three-game slide.

5/26/23 Phil Maton's 'Walk Year' Off To A Fine Start. Like plenty of relievers, Phil Maton's career has been, let's say, volatile. There have been stretches when the right-hander looked utterly fantastic (see: 2021 postseason). Thanks to an ill-timed locker punch, he never had a chance to throw during the Astros' postseason run to another World Series title last fall. Acquired from Cleveland at the 2021 trade deadline, it has been a bit of a guess how the Astros could utilize him, especially once Héctor Neris and Bryan Abreu joined the relief corps.

5/24/23 Phil Maton's curveball is helping him become a key piece in Astros' bullpen. Finally, all the confidence the Astros have given to righty reliever Phil Maton is paying off. The 30-year-old pitcher is having his best season so far in the MLB and has mastered a weapon that, still, some people call curveball. Maton has been almost untouchable on the mound and is inducing incredibly soft contact at a great rate. It all comes down to an 0.82 ERA across 22 innings and 19 appearances out of the Astros' pen in the 2023 campaign.

4/21/23 Three Astros Things: Phil Maton, Quick Comparisons, and Luis Garcia's Cutter. Entering the 2022 season, I had high hopes for Phil Maton to assume a larger role in the Astros' bullpen. While his first 25 1/3 innings in Houston following the Myles Straw trade with Cleveland weren't exactly praiseworthy (4.97 ERA, 4.08 FIP), his performance that postseason (0.73 ERA, 2.68 FIP) definitely caught my attention.

4/20/23 Make-A-Wish grants 7-year-old Houston Astros fan's dream; boy signed as member of team and throws out first pitch. Seven-year-old Zayne Harris wanted to be a Houston Astro. In a video posted to Twitter on Monday, Zayne met with Astros GM Dana Brown during a media briefing where he signed a one-day contract with the team. Later, Zayne geared up at the Astros Team Store, courtesy of Phil Maton and his wife Katelynn. Zayne was all smiles as he went down the field to meet notable Astros players such as Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker, Ryne Stanek, and manager Dusty Baker.
