Author: Dylan Sanders May 07, 2024 In this story: San Francisco Giants Jordan Hicks MLB The San Francisco Giants offseason signings haven't all worked out, but one has found immediate success in his new role. As Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer searched for information on an aspect from each team, and he thinks the one he found for the Giants has been the source of this breakout season. 5/03/24 Miscues loom large in SF Giants' series-opening loss to Phillies. Facing the stiffest test of his short career as a starting pitcher, the biggest impact Jordan Hicks made Friday night against the Phillies wasn't anything he did on the mound. With the speedy Trea Turner standing on second base with one steal already under his belt, Hicks remained stationary when his full-count splitter to Bryce Harper popped out of Tom Murphy's glove. Replay review confirmed Turner's right foot slid across the plate just ahead of an acrobatic attempt at a tag from the pitcher, and that might as well have put the game out of reach for the Giants. It was the Phillies' fourth run, a total San Francisco failed to reach for the eighth consecutive game in a 4-3 loss.

4/21/24 Despite throwing just 65 innings last year, Jordan Hicks wants to stay in SF Giants' rotation for good. As the Friday night sun started to set at Oracle Park, Jordan Hicks looked into the outfield and thought about the two ERA leaders in the National League. In first place was Reynaldo Lopez, a 30-year-old right-hander with the Atlanta Braves who began the season with a 0.50 ERA through his first three starts, though he spent the last two seasons as a one-inning relief pitcher. “Another reliever turned into a starter,” Hicks said with a smirk. In second place was Hicks (1.57 ERA), a 27-year-old right-hander on the Giants who was one of the game's best relievers last year while handling the late innings for the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays.

4/12/24 Julio Rodriguez comes through in clutch, Bryce Miller shines again as Mariners top Cubs. In his first plate appearance vs. Cubs lefty starter Jordan Hicks, Rodriguez just missed squaring up 93-mph fastball, sending a fly ball to deep center. 4/06/24 Ex-Blue Jays pitcher Jordan Hicks excelling with Giants. The Toronto Blue Jays may be regretting their decision not to re-sign pitcher Jordan Hicks after the 2023 season. The Blue Jays acquired Hicks days before last season's trade deadline in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, sending pitching prospects Sem Robberse and Adam Kloffenstein the other way. Hicks was solid in a relief role last season for both the Cardinals and Blue Jays, putting together a 3.29 ERA with 12 saves in 15 opportunities over 65.2 innings.

3/31/24 Giants notes: Hicks flashes familiar style in dominant win vs. Padres. When he finally ran into trouble in his first start with the Giants, Jordan Hicks went back to his roots. With the bases loaded in the fourth inning on Saturday night, Hicks added a bit of extra zip to one of the world's best fastballs, dialing it up to 99 mph. The Giants would go on to win 9-6, but at the time they had just a two-run lead on the San Diego Padres. With a little help from LaMonte Wade Jr. in right field, Hicks got out of the jam.

3/29/24 Rain, injuries, ramp-ups put SF Giants' pitching situation in flux. It has been a hair under two years, 676 days to be exact, since Jordan Hicks last started a major-league game. Slated to debut in the San Francisco Giants' rotation Saturday, the 27-year-old right-hander may be forced to wait another day. A steady stream of moisture is expected to arrive overnight and provide a rare dreary day in America's finest city, potentially delaying Hicks' long-awaited return to the starting rotation. There's good reason for Hicks to be confident, despite being a bullpen arm — a good one — for the majority of his career.

3/25/24 SF Giants' right-hander dominates in final spring tune-up. The San Francisco Giants could not have asked for much more from right-hander Jordan Hicks in his final tuneup before the start of the regular season. Hicks was dominant Monday in his final start of spring training, striking out 10 while not allowing a hit in five innings as the Giants beat the Oakland A's 4-1 at the Coliseum in the first game of the exhibition Bay Bridge Series. Hicks, making the transition back to being a starting pitcher after spending last season as a reliever for both the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays, retired 14 straight batters after he walked A's second baseman Zack Gelof in the first inning.

3/09/24 SF Giants-A's: Rotation candidates make their case for final spot. Between back-to-back rainouts and a scheduled day off earlier in the week, Bob Melvin joked Saturday morning, “it feels a little bit like the All-Star break in the middle of spring.” Beyond the inconvenience of the three-hour roundtrip commute Friday to Peoria only to be rained out, the lack of action on the field has created a traffic jam of pitchers in need of work — and opportunities to showcase themselves to the coaching staff that has at least one hole to fill in its starting rotation. While Jordan Hicks started, punching out six batters over three shutout innings, the free-agent newcomer is one of the few arms locked in to the Giants' rotation, along with Logan Webb and Kyle Harrison. If Keaton Winn's elbow checks out — more on that later — he figures to be the fourth in the equation.

2/27/24 SF Giants-Mariners: Jung Hoo Lee, Jordan Hicks both notice the radar gun in spring debuts. It was a meaningful day around Giants camp, at least as far as these things go in spring training, where the games don't count and the stats don't matter. “It's very exciting,” manager Bob Melvin blurted at the mention of Jung Hoo Lee's name Tuesday morning. For the first time, Melvin was able to write the name of the Giants' biggest free-agent acquisition in the top spot of his lineup card. Occupying the bottom spot, reserved for the starting pitcher, was another cause célèbre, Jordan Hicks, whose high heat lit up the Scottsdale Stadium radar gun for the first time, too.

2/16/24 In first spring with SF Giants, Jordan Hicks is building up more than velocity. For the fourth time in his life, Jordan Hicks arrived at spring training as a starting pitcher. “My whole life, this has been my dream,” Hicks said Friday, following his highest-intensity bullpen session of the young camp. Since signing a four-year, $44 million free-agent contract this offseason, all that matters to Hicks are earned runs and innings pitched. If the latter is large and the former reasonably low, Hicks doesn't mind a drop in velocity.
