4/25/24 Rockies rally from five runs down with six-run eighth, beat Padres 10-9 in largest comeback of season. Colorado batted around in that frame to erase a five-run deficit, plating six runs in the process. After closer Justin Lawrence cemented the team's largest comeback of the season with a save in the ninth, the result was a signature moment of positivity amid a spring full of struggles. Yes, the Rockies (7-19) have still yet to win a series in eight tries after splitting with San Diego, surpassing last season's futility in that regard while also setting a franchise record to start a season. “We just had to hang in there,” Rockies manager Bud Black said.

4/13/24 Rockies Journal: Search for a qualified closer could take all season. Must be willing to deal with the quirks and harsh realities of pitching at Coors Field. There are several relievers currently trying out for the position: Justin Lawrence, Nick Mears, Jake Bird and perhaps Tyler Kinley. The Rockies hoped Daniel Bard, so good as a closer in 2022, could recover from his anxiety issues, get healthy, and become a legitimate candidate to pitch in the ninth.

2/22/24 Justin Lawrence has right stuff to be Rockies' closer — if he can harness it. Justin Lawrence trots out from the bullpen and hikes the mound. “I came into a jam in a tight ballgame and I caught myself singing the 'Sweet Caroline' song,” the Rockies' right-hander recalled Wednesday. Lawrence pitched 1 2/3 innings that night, and although he issued two walks, he allowed no runs, stranded two inherited runners, and kept Colorado in a game it eventually won, 7-6, in 10 innings. It wasn't the singular moment of Lawrence's career but it illustrates how far he's come since being a raw prospect with a unique, sidewinder delivery, 102 mph fastball and frequent bouts of inconsistency.

9/04/23 Rockies lose 7-5 as Blue Jays score twice in ninth off Justin Lawrence. The bullpen blues struck the Rockies again on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Coors Field. Toronto scored two runs off struggling closer Justin Lawrence in the ninth inning en route to a 7-5 victory that earned the Blue Jays a series win in the three-game set. “The reality of the situation is just that I've let our team down the past three weeks, almost a month now,” an emotional Lawrence said, adding that he's been working overtime but still getting bad results. Lawrence also said that teams are likely studying him and figuring out some things about his pitching patterns.

8/24/23 Colorado Rockies closer Justin Lawrence learning through the fire. It's been quite the ride for Justin Lawrence, who suddenly finds himself as the Colorado Rockies closer. Like with almost all prospects, it was still a long road to the Bigs for Lawrence who had plenty of ironing out left to do in the minors. It was all about trying to stick at the MLB level and it didn't always go according to plan. Bouts with wildness saw him bounce back-and-forth between Denver and Albuquerque, but it was clear, even from his very first couple of pitches in MLB that the stuff was there.

8/23/23 Rockies bullpen crumbles in third straight game as Colorado loses 6-5 to Rays in 10 innings to drop series in Tampa. For the second straight night, the Rockies had the Rays right where they wanted them — until they didn't. Tampa Bay scored two runs off Justin Lawrence in the ninth to tie the game, then Brandon Lowe singled home the winning run off Brent Suter in the 10th to lift the Rays to a 6-5 comeback victory over the Rockies. The bullpen crumbling in crunch time came a day after Colorado gave up nine runs in the eighth inning in the opening game of the series at Tropicana Field en route to a 12-4 loss.

5/28/23 Red-hot Ryan McMahon leads Rockies to 11-10 slugest victory over Mets. The Rockies nearly blew the game when the Mets scored three runs in the ninth off reliever Justin Lawrence, who gave up a two-run triple to Tommy Pham. Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon, who entered the weekend series in a serious home run drought, finished a triple short of the cycle and drove in five runs.

5/07/23 Rockies' Justin Lawrence throwing sweeper, reaping rewards. Justin Lawrence is not trying to be trendy. It's called the sweeper. “It's kind of a cool name, don't you think?” the Rockies' right-handed reliever said. The pitch, which is even more effective for Lawrence because he throws it with a sidearm delivery, has made him one of baseball's best relievers through the first month.

4/07/23 Rockies' sidearmer Justin Lawrence evolving into dependable reliever. Justin Lawrence's sidewinder delivery has bite and venom. On opening day, the Rockies' right-hander fanned Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth on a combined 14 pitches. “It's about comfort level and confidence and knowing that he belongs in the big leagues,” Rockies manager Bud Black said before Friday night's game against the Nationals at Coors Field.

3/24/23 Hard-throwing Justin Lawrence's path to the Rockies bullpen defined by arm slot change. Justin Lawrence dropped his arm slot — and raised his odds. Before Lawrence was a flame-throwing sidearmer in the Rockies' bullpen, he was just another right-handed reliever at Jacksonville University. “I realized that if I was going to get to the big leagues, it was going to be a different route for me,” Lawrence said. Lawrence's professional stock took off from there, but not before his progress was derailed by a positive test for PEDs that resulted in an 80-game suspension in 2020.

3/06/23 Rockies spring training report: Justin Lawrence aiming for key bullpen role. Justin Lawrence, the Rockies' right-handed reliever with the funky sidearm delivery, looks poised to finally fill his potential. Earlier in camp, Lawrence said he's never been in a better spot in his pro career. Rockies manager Bud Black agrees and he can foresee Lawrence pitching in key situations this season. “He figures, in a perfect world, to pitch in the later part of the game, depending upon his performance once we get going,” Black told reporters at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Monday morning.

11/03/22 Thursday Rockpile: Justin Lawrence is making the adjustments necessary of a big league reliever. Justin Lawrence—the Lion of Panama—cemented his big league status in 2022 with a career high 42 2/3 innings with the Colorado Rockies over 38 appearances. Most of those appearances came between August and the end of the season, but Lawrence also leveraged a solid April and several months with Triple-A Albuquerque into an overall strong extended rookie campaign. Lawrence was able to capitalize on some key adjustments he made over the offseason and at the start of the 2022 season to great success.

9/29/22 Rockies manage just four hits in 6-3 loss at San Francisco. But all of Trejo’s good came undone when the Giants scored three runs off of relievers Justin Lawrence and Chad Smith in the sixth. Lawrence was charged with all three runs, though it was Smith who gave up a two-run triple to Joc Pederson. For Rockies right-hander Jose Urena, every start is an audition for next season, be it for the Rockies or another team.

9/20/22 Estrada's 3-run homer in 10th lifts Giants past Rockies 10-7. Yastrzemski, who hit a solo homer in the fourth, greeted Smith with an RBI single before the Rockies ended the inning by throwing out Villar at the plate on a delayed double-steal attempt. The Rockies added a run in the sixth on Connor Joe’s RBI double, but San Francisco fought back to tie it with a two-run ninth. Estrada had a leadoff double against Justin Lawrence and, one out later, Flores singled him home.
