| 4/18/24 | Angels waste strong outing from Griffin Canning in loss to Rays. The good news for the Angels was that Griffin Canning finally changed course. The Angels lost 2-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday afternoon, missing a chance to win the four-game series and wasting Canning's encouraging outing. Mike Trout produced the Angels only run, leading off the sixth inning with a walk. Trout stole second and third – giving him five steals this season – and he scored on a sacrifice fly. Griffin Canning seemed to answer any questions about his health last season after missing all of 2022 as he recovered from a stress fracture in his back. The Los Angeles Angels right-hander went 7-8 with a 4.32 ERA in 24 games (22 starts), including a masterful performance against the Boston Red Sox on May 23 when he threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Canning will start Thursday afternoon's game against the Tampa Bay Rays hoping that he can alleviate any growing concerns that there might be lingering issues, based on a subpar start to this season. Griffin Canning will take the mound on Saturday with seven days of rest since his previous outing, which he hopes will allow him to get back to the way he pitched for most of last season. The Angels right-hander threw two bullpen sessions between starts instead of one. “I'm a feel pitcher so if I feel like something's off, maybe it feels bigger than it needs to be, but I feel like I'm getting my rhythm,” Canning said.
