5/13/24 Red Sox injuries: 'Brunch for the boys' in Worcester on Wednesday. Red Sox starter Garrett Whitlock (left oblique strain) is still on track to make a rehab start Wednesday for Triple-A Worcester at Polar Park. Manager Alex Cora said he didn't know it was such an early start time until Whitlock told him the other day. “Brunch for the boys,” Cora said, smiling. Whitlock is scheduled to pitch 3 innings, Cora said.

5/11/24 Red Sox starter to make rehab start next week in Worcester. While the Boston Red Sox have been dealing with injury issues throughout the beginning of the season, they are starting to have players ready to come back. According to "The Boston Globe's" Alex Speier, starting pitcher Garrett Whitlock is expected to make a rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday. Whitlock was placed on the 15-day injured list back in mid-April with an oblique strain. Prior to the injury, he had made four starts for Boston this year, posting a 1.19 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.

Righty Nick Pivetta will be activated off the injured list to start Wednesday's series finale against the Braves, marking the first reinforcement for a Sox rotation that has been operating with just two of its five regular starters (Kutter Crawford and Tanner Houck) since Brayan Bello joined Pivetta and Garrett Whitlock on the shelf April 24. 4/29/24 Noah Kahan, Patrick Dempsey brought the star power to Fenway Park over the weekend. Baseball season met stick season on Sunday night as Grammy-nominated musician Noah Kahan threw out the first pitch before the Red Sox's game against the Chicago Cubs. The Vermont native, who's set to play Fenway Park for a pair of shows over the summer, donned a Red Sox jersey as he stepped up to the mound, with the crowd dancing and singing along to his music before he lobbed a throw to pitcher Garrett Whitlock parked behind home plate. Unfortunately the pitch was just a bit short, causing Kahan to put his face in his glove in dismay as the crowd briefly sighed before returning to cheering on the star as “Stick Season,” the title track to his third album, played over the ballpark speakers. “I wish I could reverse time and do that again,” Kahan wrote in an Instagram post after the pregame festivities.

4/22/24 Red Sox righty excited to join rotation that has 'proved everyone wrong' so far. Initially when Garrett Whitlock became the second Red Sox starter to be placed on the injured list last Tuesday, manager Alex Cora said reliever Josh Winckowski wasn't in the mix to take a spot in the battered rotation. Now, after Winckowski made a spot start Sunday in Pittsburgh, it appears the right-hander will get an extended chance to remain there. Cora said Winckowski will “most likely” remain in the team's rotation for the coming weeks with Whitlock (oblique strain) and Nick Pivetta (flexor strain) sidelined. Winckowski, who allowed one run and three hits in 3 ? innings to start Sunday's win, is in line to pitch again Saturday at home against the Cubs.

4/21/24 Red Sox sweep Pirates behind a solid opening performance from Josh Winckowski. The Red Sox brought out the broomsticks, sweeping the Pirates following a 6-1 win Sunday. In the absence of Garrett Whitlock, Josh Winckowski took the hill for the Red Sox, going 3? innings and yielding just a run. The Sox struck out 14 times, but their eight key hits came at crucial moments in the contest. Julian McWilliams can be reached at julian.mcwilliams@globe.com.

4/17/24 Garrett Whitlock Headed To IL, Pushed Back On Red Sox Decision. The Red Sox are putting the stop sign in front of starting pitcher Garrett Whitlock. Whitlock is headed to the 15-day injured list with what manager Alex Cora called a “slight” left oblique strain. “The hope is for him to be back as soon as possible,” Cora said prior to Wednesday's matchup at Fenway Park. Cora credited Red Sox head athletic trainer Brandon Henry for noticing Whitlock's oblique injury during the middle of his outing against the Guardians, in which he allowed two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one.

4/16/24 Red Sox's Garrett Whitlock Makes Early Exit After Four Innings. Sign In BOSTON — Red Sox starting pitcher Garrett Whitlock departed early from Tuesday night's outing against the Guardians, becoming the latest of Boston's early-season injury concerns. The right-hander was in the process of making his fourth start of the 2024 campaign, but due to left oblique tightness, according to the Red Sox, Whitlock's night ended after just 54 pitches . By then, he'd already surrendered two earned runs off three hits and a walk, striking out one. That marked Whitlock's shortest outing of the season, beating out the 27-year-old's 4 1/3 innings thrown against the Los Angeles Angels on April 6. Whitlock hasn't undergone the smoothest transition since being moved from the

4/11/24 Red Sox Swept By Orioles, Cannot Capitalize On Rising Strength. For all the questions that surrounded the group in spring training, the starting rotation keeps putting together competitive outings for the Boston Red Sox. Garrett Whitlock took the ball on Thursday night against the Baltimore Orioles, looking to further improve the league's best staff ERA. The right-hander did his job, allowing just one earned run over five solid innings with four strikeouts with an improved pitch mix for the Red Sox. “The changeup was a lot better this time through,” Whitlock told reporters on Thursday night, as seen on NESN's postgame coverage.

4/03/24 Red Sox Rule 5 pitcher has 'shown real stones' with 11 straight outs. Garrett Whitlock understands the situation Justin Slaten is in. Whitlock had never pitched above Double A before the Red Sox selected him in the December 2020 Rule 5 Draft and then used him as a high-leverage multi-inning reliever throughout the 2021 season. Boston already has used Slaten, a December 2023 Rule 5 Pick, in a tie game in the bottom of the 10th inning in his MLB debut Friday and a one-run game in the sixth and seventh innings Wednesday. Slaten, who only pitched in five Triple-A games before this season, retired all four batters he faced in the Red Sox' 1-0 victory over the Athletics here at Oakland Coliseum on Wednesday.

4/01/24 Red Sox starters surprise to earn series split with Mariners. The Boston Red Sox entered Sunday with a 1-2 record after dropping the previous two to the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park with Garrett Whitlock on the mound with a chance to split the first series of the 2024 season. Whitlock, who struggled as a starter in 2023, threw five strong innings, giving up just one run (an RBI single by Josh Rojas in the second) and three hits with eight strikeouts.

3/31/24 How Garrett Whitlock 'Changed Script' To Dominate Mariners. Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock went into his start Sunday knowing he wanted to attack the Seattle Mariners with his off-speed pitches early on. Whitlock ended up relying more on sinkers and fastballs and the results were the same with the right-hander continuing to mow down the Mariners. The adjustment was key in Whitlock tossing five stellar innings in Boston's 5-1 win at T-Mobile Park.

3/30/24 It turns out the gyroball is real after all, and Red Sox righthander Garrett Whitlock can throw it. After working on it during spring training, Garrett Whitlock will use a new pitch against the Seattle Mariners when he makes his first start of the season on Sunday. Bailey referred to the pitch as a gyro slider or a bullet slider. “It's a slider but I don't throw it like a slider,” Whitlock said. “It's an off-speed pitch even though I throw it more like a fastball.”

3/20/24 Is Garrett Whitlock's dominant outing in a minor league game the last step before he's named to the Red Sox starting rotation?. Whitlock carved the Twins with an arsenal that he used to get to all parts of the zone, featuring a worm-killing sinker while getting swings and misses on his changeup, slider, sweeper, and an intriguing new offering that left lefties flailing. “That's the new toy,” said Whitlock. With that “new toy,” Whitlock added to the impression that his arsenal is more rounded than it has been in the past. For most of his big league career, he's worked with three pitches — a sinker, changeup, and one version of a slider.

Me and [catcher Connor[ Wong were on the same page. We kind of talked about that last night, and so it was nice kind of having a game plan going into it.” Advertisement Whitlock's changeup, the go-to pitch in his arsenal, had major depth to it in addition to horizontal movement. “The changeup got better as

Santo Domingo native Joely Rodriguez closed out the win with a scoreless ninth.
