Author: Brad Wakai Apr 30, 2024 In this story: San Francisco Giants MLB Keaton Winn Coming into the season, the San Francisco Giants ' rotation looked to be much improved on paper after they added two starting pitchers to pair with their ace Logan Webb. When they signed Jordan Hicks, it was revealed that they would be converting him into a starter instead of using him as a reliever. 4/28/24 Giants edge Pirates to win low-scoring series. Keaton Winn won his third straight start with six strong innings, Thairo Estrada and Mike Yastrzemski belted their team's first back-to-back home runs of the season and the San Francisco Giants prevailed in another low-scoring affair with the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. The homers by Estrada, his fourth of the year, and Yastrzemski, his second, came as part of a three-run third against Pirates starter Jared Jones (2-3). LaMonte Wade Jr.'s sacrifice fly scored Tyler Fitzgerald with the third run of the inning. San Francisco hit multiple homers in a home game for just the second time this season, matching the blasts by Jung Hoo Lee and Patrick Bailey against the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 20.

4/23/24 Blake Snell, Giants look to sweep Mets. Former teammates who moved on to new teams the past two seasons face off Wednesday afternoon when the San Francisco Giants go for a three-game sweep of the visiting New York Mets. The Giants received brilliant starting pitching from Keaton Winn and Logan Webb in 5-2 and 5-1 victories the past two nights, allowing San Francisco to equal its longest winning streak of the season at two games. The hosts hope left-hander Blake Snell (0-3, 11.57 ERA) can recapture his old magic when he sees an old friend, fellow lefty Sean Manaea (1-1, 4.12), as his mound opponent.

3/18/24 Handicapping SF Giants' top position battles heading into final week of spring training. The final week of Cactus League play is upon us and there are, by manager Bob Melvin's estimation, at least two or three spots on the San Francisco Giants' Opening Day roster that are yet to be decided. There's optimism Keaton Winn can fill one hole in the rotation, but the fifth spot remains wide open. Well, Nick Ahmed has had something to say about that. Starting tonight against the Reds, the Giants have seven games left before they leave Arizona another three exhibitions in Sacramento, San Francisco and Oakland before they must cut their roster — currently at 47 players — down to 26 for Opening Day next Thursday in San Diego.

3/17/24 SF Giants-Rockies: Keaton Winn makes long-awaited debut, Logan Webb goes six. Finally, in the last week of spring training, there is visual evidence of the Giants' fourth starter. Keaton Winn made his long-awaited Cactus League debut Sunday in relief of Logan Webb, taking down 1? innings in a 5-3 loss to the Rockies that looked like the first the 26-year-old had pitched in a game this spring. “Next time it'll be a little longer,” manager Bob Melvin said, “but I thought he looked good.” Winn was one of the young pitchers the Giants had earmarked spots for in their rotation, along with Kyle Harrison and Tristan Beck, but shortly into camp he was shut down out of precaution when his elbow started barking after a bullpen session.

1/23/24 The 'wait, this isn't it, is it?' mailbag. If, come July, Keaton Winn is doing his best Mike Leake impression and eating innings with a mid-4s ERA, on pace for a 2-WAR season, then that's a cromulent fifth starter who should probably be optioned if Alex Cobb or Robbie Ray is available. If Ross Stripling is doing the same, then someone will be more than interested in trading for him: remember, the Dodgers purposely traded for Lance Lynn last year when he had a 6.47 ERA. If Jordan Hicks' nice ERA is the result of dominating innings one through three, then struggling for innings four through six, the Giants can move him to the bullpen and promise to give him another shot at starting in 2025, after a full offseason of conditioning and building up the arm with the training staff. The Giants can buy time with a decision then, by being ultra conservative with both Cobb and Ray, and slow-playing their rehab while riding the MLB wave.

1/07/24 Player Review: Keaton Winn. Keaton Winn ended his eventful 2023 year by returning to where he last excelled. The 25 year old's high school in Packwood, Iowa honored the San Francisco Giants right-hander by retiring his number-23 jersey. The resume is impressive: a four-sport athlete, repeated state football awards, an Iowa state track championship, 26 rebounds in a basketball game, the only perfect game in Pekin High School history as well as the career ERA record. After being drafted out of community college (twice) by the Giants, the right-hander ended up missing nearly three years of play due to COVID and Tommy John surgery.
