Four Detroit Tigers qualify for the Prospect Promotion Incentive because of their spot in the top 100 rankings. The PPI is exactly as it sounds: It's designed to give a little nudge to a team that might be on the fence about deciding whether to promote a top prospect to the Opening Day roster. For practical purposes, the PPI is unlikely to change the Tigers' plans in 2024, although it could provide a nice bonus if Keith has a big year. To be PPI-eligible, a player must retain his rookie status (no more than 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched) and be ranked in two of the three major preseason prospect lists (MLB Pipeline, Baseball America and ESPN). Detroit Tigers infield prospect Colt Keith is just the seventh prospect to sign a long-term big-league contract before making his Major League debut. Keith will meet the media on Tuesday at Comerica Park. If all goes as expected, he'll make his debut there as the Tigers' second baseman in about two months. The deal is not without risk for both sides, although the wide salary range will help make the deal more palatable for the Tigers if Keith flops, and more lucrative for Keith if he turns into a star.
