Eugenio Velez said he did not see the Pat Burrell liner that drilled him in the head Saturday night because he was taking a sip from a cup of Gatorade the instant the ball zoomed into the dugout.
Velez sustained a concussion but escaped with no skull fracture when the ball hit him just above the left ear. He underwent tests and spent the night at a local hospital before his discharge Sunday morning. Velez then joined the Giants for their flight home.
The Giants placed Velez on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Ryan Rohlinger from Triple-A Fresno.
