| 9/09/10 | Yahoo sports is reporting that Freese had minor surgery to his left ankle after the club previously announced he was out for the season following right ankle surgery. |
| 8/16/10 | The Cards also had to make room on the 40-man roster. In order to do that, they transferred third baseman David Freese from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. A player can only be moved to the 60-day DL when a team has 40 players on its 40-man roster. |
| 8/03/10 | Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday that third baseman David Freese’s most recent injury is “season ending.”
Freese will have surgery to repair a torn tendon in right ankle, and it is not clear how long Freese will need to recover. Mozeliak met with the media this afternoon at Busch Stadium and the first words he spoke when asked about Freese were: "Not good."
Freese was hurt Monday night after apparently re-injuring his problematic right ankle in a rehab assignment at Class AA Springfield. Manager Tony La Russa said Freese heard a "pop" as he rounded third base and pulled up awkwardly on his way home.
Mozeliak likened the injury to the ankle equivalent of the wrist injury Mark DeRosa had last season. Essentially, a tendon casing in Freese's right ankle tore.
The general manager said that the injury appears to be independent of Freese's other ailments

| 8/03/10 | Cardinals third baseman David Freese came up limping running the bases in his first rehab game at Double-A Springfield on Monday, and the rookie will see team physicians in St. Louis on Tuesday to evaluate a strain in his lower right leg.
Freese has been on the disabled list for a month with a bone bruise in his right ankle. He also fractured his left big toe while on the disabled list.
He had gone 1-for-2 with a double before suffering the injury Monday night, when he reportedly started clutching at his right ankle while running the bases before exiting the field. |
| 8/02/10 | With one of their key bats in Ryan Ludwick sent off in trade Saturday, the Cardinals are close to returning another key contributor from the season's first half off the disabled list. David Freese passed his final test Sunday morning -- running the bases -- and will be sent to Double-A Springfield on a rehab assignment Monday.
The third baseman said he is beyond excited to finally get back on the field.
"I am ready to rock," Freese said.
Freese went on the 15-day disabled list in late June after a bone bruise in his right ankle was slow to heal. Freese tried to play through the injury, but may have worsened its effects, causing the club to be cautious this time around.
Although he said no concrete timetable has been set, Freese believes he will rehab for around a week before returning to the Cardinals.
"We took the [rehab] pretty seriously this time," Freese said. "They are probably not even listening to me too much. They will watch me and make a decision, and I showed them today that I am ready to go."
"[They're] talking about a little less then a week. ... When I come [back] up here, all cylinders have to be running."
Freese has hit .296 with four homers and 36 RBIs this season. |
| 7/31/10 | The Cardinals came home from a weeklong road trip to some very good news. Third baseman David Freese is making excellent progress in his return from two injuries and hopes to go on a Minor League rehabilitation assignment as soon as Sunday.
"I ran yesterday and it felt pretty good, so I'm just looking to pass today and tomorrow and get out of here. Go to Memphis and get back on the field," Freese said. "It's been frustrating this past month. I'm just looking forward to getting back out there."
The 27-year-old Freese last played on June 27. He was feeling discomfort in his right ankle for some time before that, but at the end of June he was finally placed on the disabled list. Approximately three weeks later, he endured a setback, dropping a weight on his left big toe and suffering a racture.
"I think he's really feeling good," manager Tony La Russa said. "I don't know how much the toe affected him. I just talked to him and you can tell the sincerity in what he says. He's really fired up about the way he's feeling. So that's a good sign. He's making a lot of noises about being very close. Our training staff wants to make sure he goes step by step before he goes crazy, but it's all working really well for him."
Freese is batting .296 with a .361 on-base percentage, a .404 slugging percentage, four home runs and 36 RBIs for the Cardinals this season. In his absence, Felipe Lopez has been the team's primary third baseman. The return would allow Lopez to move back to the middle infield, where both Skip Schumaker and Brendan Ryan are enduring down years at the plate.

| 7/21/10 | Despite suffering a fractured big toe on Sunday, Cardinals third baseman David Freese does not believe he will need any more time for recovery than was already expected with a bone bruise in his ankle. Freese has been on the disabled list since June 28, when he hurt his right ankle while stepping awkwardly on third base. The fractured toe is on his left foot.
The third baseman suffered the injury after a 75-lb dumbbell fell off a rack onto his toe while working out Sunday. Though bruised and purple, Freese is still able to move the toe.
"It is not going to set me back too much, I can move it and stuff still," Freese said.
Although no firm date has been set for his return, Freese believes he will take the field before August 1.
"Soon. Next week I would say," Freese said.

| 7/20/10 | David Freese is not having a good month. Already on the disabled list with a bone bruise in his right ankle, Freese fractured the big toe of his left foot Sunday.
According to manager Tony La Russa, Freese was working out in the gym when he dropped a plate on his toe.
The toe injury might not affect the timetable for Freese's return, which was not expected until late July, at the earliest, with the ankle injury.
"They took an X-Ray and it is a little fracture," La Russa said. "They are saying it might not be any longer then his ankle. So I really don't know, but he has that to deal with as well." |
| 7/16/10 | General manager John Mozeliak said Ryan Ludwick is "probably" 10 days away from recovering from a strained left calf and David Freese is still two weeks away from seeing game action. |
| 6/29/10 | St. Louis Cardinals rookie third baseman David Freese(notes) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, because of a bone bruise to his right ankle. |
| 6/11/10 | Third baseman David Freese participated in running drills on Wednesday to test his sprained right ankle and his body gave him positive feedback.
"It's feels good," Freese said of his sprained ankle that has kept him out of the lineup since Saturday. "We'll check it out after [Thursday's] off-day on Friday. That's the goal, but I don't want to push it. If I feel really good I'll be back in there."
Manager Tony La Russa echoed Freese's sentiment and said it's still not set in stone he'll return Friday but that it's certainly the goal.
"David has made enough improvement that we're optimistic now that he'll be back Friday but we're not sure," La Russa said. "He's made some improvement and with a off-day tomorrow we'll evaluate him Friday."
|
| 6/09/10 | Cardinals center fielder Colby Rasmus and third baseman David Freese were out of the starting lineup yet again on Tuesday and aren't expected back until Friday against the D-backs in Phoenix.
Rasmus, who also missed Monday's game with tightness in his left calf that caused him to leave Sunday's game against the Brewers in the sixth inning, received treatment on his injured calf but has yet to participate in running drills.
"He's better but I don't think he's 100 percent," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "I don't think he'll play tomorrow. I doubt it."
Freese hasn't started since Saturday because of a sprained right ankle but served as a pinch-hitter on Sunday and Monday and will still be available in that role.
|
| 6/07/10 | Cardinals third baseman David Freese missed Sunday's start against the Brewers to rest a sprained right ankle, but the rookie was available to pinch-hit.
Felipe Lopez moved to third base for the game, Brendan Ryan started at shortstop and recent acquisition Aaron Miles made his first start of the season at second base.
Freese twisted the ankle in the sixth inning of Saturday's 5-4 victory over the Brewers after stepping awkwardly on third base.
"Freese is sore, you know, we are not going to have to disable him," manager Tony La Russa said. "We are going to keep him out, get completely healed."
|
| 6/06/10 | Cardinals infielder David Freese will likely miss Sunday's game against the Brewers, and he is officially listed as day-to-day after spraining his right ankle in the sixth inning of St. Louis' 5-4 win over Milwaukee on Saturday.
Freese twisted the ankle approaching third base in the bottom of the sixth inning and was replaced by Aaron Miles.
"I was just watching the play -- you know, it was two outs -- getting ready to watch the throw and I was trying to feel for the bag and rolled it," Freese said.
"I will probably be able to hit, but we will see tomorrow. Two or three days at the most."
|
| 3/31/10 | Manager Tony La Russa notified David Freese prior to the Cardinals' game against the Mets that Freese will be the club's primary and Opening Day third baseman. |
