5/03/24 Ex-Yankees pitcher's 'inappropriate actions' that caused suspension revealed. It turns out Pittsburgh Pirates closer Aroldis Chapman didn't say anything to precipitate his suspension in mid-April during a game against the New York Mets. According to The New York Post, Chapman was suspended a game “for tossing a baseball backhand toward the umpires that rolled and hit another umpire.” The suspension was reduced from two games after Chapman agreed to not appeal. On April 15, an angry Chapman was ejected by plate umpire Edwin Moscoso after giving up a two-run double to Harrison Bader in a loss.

4/26/24 Gary Sánchez pinch hits for 2-run homer in 8th; Brewers rally for 7-5 win, series split with Pirates. Gary Sánchez hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the eighth inning to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates and a series split on Thursday. Sánchez drove an 0-2 sinker at 101.9 mph from Aroldis Chapman (0-2) 371 feet to right with two outs, putting the Brewers ahead 6-5. Two of his three home runs came this series, including on Tuesday when he produced Milwaukee's lone run in a 2-1 loss. “He's the same Chapman from when I knew him at the Yankees,” said Sánchez, a batterymate of Chapman's with the Yankees from 2016-21.

4/26/24 Resurgent Joey Bart looks to lead Pirates vs. Giants. The Pirates fell to .500 with a 7-5 home loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, while the Giants failed to get to the break-even mark following an 8-2 drubbing dealt by the visiting New York Mets on Wednesday. Pittsburgh was looking for a series win and held a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning on Thursday before veteran reliever Aroldis Chapman served up a two-run homer to former teammate Gary Sanchez. The good news for the Pirates was the continued strong play of catcher Joey Bart, who never lived up to his billing after being selected with the No. 2 overall pick by the Giants in the 2018 draft. Bart bounced from minors to majors for four consecutive seasons, hitting .219 as a Giant in 162 games, before getting dealt to the Pirates earlier this month for minor-leaguer Austin Strickland.

2/29/24 Mets discussed 'potential deal' with Yankees quitter, according to insider. Aroldis Chapman may have left the Yankees on bad terms, but he seemed to have left open the possibility of returning to New York — with the Mets. On Wednesday, Andy Martino of SNY reported, “Per league sources, the Mets and Chapman were discussing a potential deal in the approximately $8 million range before Chapman signed with Pittsburgh for $10.5 million.” The Cuban native would have served as the set-up man for closer Edwin Díaz, a powerful tandem at the end of games.

2/28/24 Mets Rumors: Aroldis Chapman Discussed $8M Contract Before $10.5M Pirates Deal. Julio Aguilar/Getty Images The New York Mets and left-handed relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman were discussing a deal in the $8 million range before the Pittsburgh Pirates signed him for $10.5 million, per Andy Martino of SNY. "The bullpen group carries more upside, though it would have been even better if the team had landed Aroldis Chapman to set up Edwin Diaz. Per league sources, the Mets and Chapman were discussing a potential deal in the approximately $8 million range before Chapman signed with Pittsburgh for $10.5 million." The 36-year-old Chapman, a seven-time All-Star, pitched for the Kansas City Royals before landing with the eventual World Series champion Texas Rangers last season. He

2/01/24 'Headhunting' ex-Yankees pitcher cleared air with new teammate in New York. The relationship between Aroldis Chapman and Andrew McCutchen is one founded on competitiveness — with a dose of a fastball (or two) that went up and inside. After all, the two were staples in a divisional rivalry between the Cincinnati Reds (Chapman) and Pittsburgh Pirates (McCutchen) from 2010-15 and Chapman was the closer trying to silence McCutchen's powerful bat. In 2012, Chapman let go of a 98-mph fastball that nailed McCutchen in the shoulder, and at the time, it riled up fans and McCutchen, who called it “a little intentional” before watching the replay and seeing a nod of apology from Chapman.

1/31/24 Aroldis Chapman eager to help Pirates elbow their way into playoff race in whatever role they need. Aroldis Chapman isn't in Pittsburgh to take David Bednar's job. The seven-time All-Star closer is happy to fill whatever bullpen role a team finally ready to win sooner rather than later needs, even if that means serving in a set-up role to Bednar, himself a two-time All-Star. “We haven’t discussed it yet but it’s just something I’m pretty easy going about,” Chapman said via a translator after his $10.5 million, one-year contract was announced Wednesday.

1/23/24 How does the Aroldis Chapman signing make sense for the Pirates?. To the shock of absolutely everybody, the Pittsburgh Pirates' first eight figure deal this offseason went to a bullpen piece, and of all the pen arms available it went to LHP Aroldis Chapman. Chapman was suspended 30 games in 2021 under MLB's then newly minted joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy for an incident that occurred in October of 2015.

1/23/24 Pirates Sign 7-Time All-Star, World Series Winner: Reports. The Pirates are making a major addition to their pitching staff by adding seven-time All-Star reliever Aroldis Chapman to their roster, according to multiple reports. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reports that the deal is for one year and $10.5 million, which would make Chapman the second-highest paid player on the Bucs after outfielder Bryan Reynolds. Reynolds will make in excess of $13 million this year. Chapman most recently played for the World Series champion Texas Rangers, who obtained him via a mid-season trade with the Kansas City Royals.

Author: Pat Ragazzo Publish date: Jan 22, 2024 3:23 PM EST In this story: New York Yankees Aroldis Chapman A familiar face could be returning to the big apple, but not with the New York Yankees . As SNY insider Andy Martino reported on Monday, the New York Mets have shown interest in former Yankees star closer Aroldis Chapman. However, Martino noted that Chapman might not be the best fit for the Mets. Chapman spent seven seasons with the Yankees from 2016-2022. 1/15/24 Which Players Could the A's Sign as Potential Trade Deadline Pieces?. Which Players Could the A's Sign as Potential Trade Deadline Pieces? The Oakland A's need more players that could become trade pieces during the season in order to stock up the farm system Author: Jason Burke Publish date: Jan 15, 2024 7:00 AM EST Last off-season we saw the Kansas City Royals sign Aroldis Chapman only to trade him at the deadline in exchange for Cole Ragans, who went on to have one of the best second halves in the Majors, finishing 7th in ERA (2.64) and 4th in fWAR (2.4). Obviously, the big question for Ragans will be whether or not he can sustain that success over a full season, but for now he looks like a key piece in the Royals having more success in 2024 than they did last
