Cron both triggered opt-out clauses in their respective contracts Friday, which forced the Red Sox to make a decision on each player by Sunday. Chris Murphy's elbow injury left Brennan Bernadino as Boston's only healthy left-handed reliever, so Rodríguez was an obvious choice to slide in and add depth. Cron and lefthanded pitcher Joely Rodriguez exercised the right to opt out of their minor league deals with the Red Sox on Friday. The Sox have until Sunday to decide whether to add the two to their big league roster or permit them to become free agents. Both players expressed hope of remaining with the Sox. Cron, catcher Roberto Pérez and lefty reliever Joely Rodríguez — will all have the ability to opt out of their contracts Friday because of the type of free agents they are, multiple sources confirmed this week. Cron's father, Chris Cron, played two years in the majors and is currently an assistant hitting coach for the Oakland Athletics. Cron grew up in Arizona, played at the University of Utah, and was drafted in the 44th round in 2008 but elected to not sign with the White Sox at the time.
