5/13/24 Former Dodgers Manager Could Take Over Blue Jays This Year: Report. Los Angeles Dodger manager Don Mattingly could potentially return to the helm of a major league bench this season. Mattingly, currently serving as the Toronto Blue Jays' bench coach, might step up to manage the team, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale. "The Toronto Blue Jays are one of baseball's most underachieving teams once again, sitting in last place, with manager John Schneider on the hot seat," Nightengale wrote Sunday.

5/12/24 MLB rumors: John Schneider's expected Blue Jays replacement emerges if he's fired. The Toronto Blue Jays have been one of the more disappointing teams in MLB so far this season holding an 18-22 record after losing two out of three to the Minnesota Twins at home this weekend, and this potentially puts manager John Schneider on the hot seat, which makes the attention turn to bench coach Don Mattingly, who has plenty of managerial experience. “If the Blue Jays continue to struggle, and Schneider is the scapegoat, his replacement is expected to be Don Mattingly,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today said.

5/08/24 Struggling Blue Jays hold closed-door meeting. Things are not going well for the Toronto Blue Jays. Going up against the MLB-best Philadelphia Phillies yesterday, the Blue Jays didn't appear to be even close in terms of competition, falling by a 10-1 final. The Blue Jays have lost 10 of their last 13 games, and are sitting at just 16-20 on the season. Many have been calling for a big change in the batting order, though manager John Schneider doesn't seem keen on doing so; however, that doesn't mean he and the team aren't trying to figure things out.

4/29/24 Blue Jays pitching prospect Brandon Barriera has hybrid Tommy John surgery. Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospect Brandon Barriera has had hybrid Tommy John surgery. Nate Heisler, Barriera's agent, announced the operation on Monday morning and Blue Jays manager John Schneider confirmed it. Barriera was Toronto's first-round draft pick in 2022. The 20-year-old has a 13.50 earned-run average after lasting 1 1/3 innings in his only start this season for the Class-A Dunedin Blue Jays of the Florida State League.

4/25/24 Perez homers as KC beats Blue Jays 2-1 in game called after 5 innings, 3 1/2-hour rain delay. Royals manager Matt Quatraro was frustrated that his team was left hanging in limbo. Blue Jays counterpart John Schneider was equally perturbed that his team wasn't being given a chance to finish out a game it was losing. After playing five innings, then waiting out a bizarre rain delay that stretched to 3 hours, 38 minutes, the Royals finally were declared a 2-1 winner Thursday — their third straight one-run victory to wrap up their four-game set with Toronto. Salvador Perez provided both of their runs with a two-out, two-run homer off José Berrios (4-1) in the first, and Cole Ragans (1-2) earned the win by allowing the lone Blue Jays run on three hits and three walks in five rain-soaked innings.

4/18/24 From cold to clutch, Yankees' Jose Trevino made most of opportunity off bench. As soon as Blue Jays manager John Schneider emerged from the third-base dugout, summoning left-handed reliever Tim Mayza from Toronto's bullpen, Aaron Boone turned and made eye contact with Yankees catcher Jose Trevino. Catcher Austin Wells was due up and with a lefty coming on in a big spot — runners on second and third with one out in the ninth, Yankees trailing by one — Boone wanted to counter with his own substitution.

4/13/24 John Schneider's 3-word claim on rising Blue Jays weapon serves as warning to rest of MLB. Despite feeling myriad emotions, Rodríguez said he was able to control them Saturday by focusing on executing his game plan. Rodríguez also dropped in his tricky hesitation delivery. After representing Cuba in last year's World Baseball Classic, Rodriguez took the remainder of the year off from professional baseball and instead worked on preparing to transition to the big leagues.

4/11/24 Blue Jays rival says lots of people have "beef" with John Schneider. During his time with the Toronto Blue Jays, manager John Schneider has never been one to shy away from sharing his thoughts. “He's not very tough to pitch to when you execute,” Schneider said last April, following a series where Raleigh had hit three homers in three games against Toronto. In the 2022 Wild Card Series against Toronto, Raleigh had four hits in two games, including a home run as the Mariners swept Toronto.

4/08/24 What, me worry? Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins clings to faith the bats will come alive. In 2022, the Jays ranked fourth with 775 runs. Aside from a handful of games, including Monday night's home opener that resulted in a 5-2 win, it appears little has changed in 2024. The roster wasn't altered much during the winter as the front office stuck with the status quo and the same can be said about the talking points that defend poor play. “We certainly understand that any fan, just like myself, just like John Schneider, would like to see us start off 10-0, and would like to see us score eight runs every day,” Jays general manager Ross Atkins said of an offence that entered Monday ranked 22nd in the majors in runs.

4/04/24 Now what? Sure it's early, but benign Blue Jays hitting woes look all too familiar. It sounded as if manager John Schneider caught himself before dumping more gasoline on the early season, small sample size, but still troublesome Blue Jays fire. 4/01/24 Rays split Opening Weekend series with Blue Jays after 9-2 loss. After winning the opener 8-1 on Thursday, the Blue Jays were outscored 13-3 in losing the next two games. Toronto is 20-35 in road games against Tampa Bay since the start of the 2018 season. "Everyone kind of doing their part a little bit whether it was working on a walk or getting a big hit, so that's kind of that's kind of what we're shooting for," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. Randy Arozarena homered for the Rays.

3/29/24 Blue Jays' John Schneider puts MLB on notice with fiery warning after Rays win. The Toronto Blue Jays have made the playoffs in both seasons with John Schneider as manager, but each time they were swept out of the Wild Card Round. Heading into the 2024 season, Schneider is looking for the Blue Jays to prove themselves and show they can withstand a deep playoff run. Toronto began that journey on the right foot, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays on Opening Day, 8-2. Schneider was impressed by the offense outburst and remarked that it's the exact kind of thing he wants to see from his lineup regularly, via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.

3/26/24 Toronto Blue Jays looking for more in 2024 after third wild-card sweep in four years. There was no roster makeover, blockbuster trade or eye-popping free-agent signing for the Toronto Blue Jays this past off-season. "The mindset is just more excitement," said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. The 2023 edition of Canada's lone big-league team snagged the last American League playoff berth but was swept in the wild-card round. Team brass did take a run at landing two-way superstar free agent Shohei Ohtani in the off-season but missed out.

3/25/24 Jays closer Romano (elbow) likely headed to IL. Manager John Schneider said Monday it is "reasonable to say" Toronto will open the season Thursday at Tampa Bay without the two-time All-Star right-hander. Romano, 30, made five appearances this spring and allowed one run on two hits in 4 1/3 innings, fanning six batters. Romano is 19-15 with 97 saves and a 2.67 ERA in 216 games (no starts) since making his debut with Toronto in 2019. Fellow reliever Erik Swanson is dealing with a forearm injury, leaving Yimi Garcia and Chad Green as candidates for closing duties until Romano returns.
