Levi Luna is a sports writer from Nicaragua who is known for his boxing coverage and reporting on his country's most famous ballplayer, Yankees reliever Jonathan Loaisiga. Luna usually spends a week or so in Tampa during spring training and travels to New York a couple of times a year to see Loaisiga, who gives him great access at — and away from — the ballpark. A couple of years ago, Luna texted me a photo from his homeland that he took of Loaisiga playing pool with retired pitcher Vicente Padilla, a 2002 All-Star who probably ranks as Nicaragua's second-best big-leaguer behind El Presidente, Dennis Martinez. New York Yankees right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga said Saturday that he's having season-ending surgery to repair a torn UCL in his throwing elbow, but that it won't be Tommy John. Dr. Keith Meister will perform the surgery in Arlington, Texas.
