8/02/25 Red Sox Announce Three Roster Moves Ahead Of Astros Clash. The Boston Red Sox are riding high on Saturday after they picked up a walk-off 2-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday night. Ahead of their upcoming game against the Astros, the Red Sox made a slew of roster moves involving their relief pitching depth. Boston ultimately had a fairly quiet trade deadline day, adding just Steven Matz and Dustin May into the fold.

8/01/25 What's been 'huge' for Red Sox trade addition Steven Matz this season. New Red Sox reliever Steven Matz's curveball has been a dominant pitch for him this season, unlike in previous years. Boston acquired the 34-year-old lefty from the Cardinals for corner infield prospect Blaze Jordan on Wednesday. The Sox activated him before Friday's game and optioned lefty Brennan Bernardino to Triple-A Worcester. Matz has gone to his curveball 20.6% of the time and opponents are batting .188 with a .205 expected batting average, .292 slugging percentage and .332 expected slugging percentage against it.

8/01/25 Red Sox make 2 roster moves, option lefty to make room for trade addition Steven Matz. The Red Sox have activated left-handed reliever Steven Matz, who they acquired in a trade with the Cardinals on Wednesday night. To clear a spot on the active roster, Boston optioned lefty Brennan Bernardino to Triple-A Worcester. Matz has posted a 3.44 ERA in 32 outings (55 innings) this year. “He's served multiple roles in the big leagues, but it seems like out of the pen the stuff has ticked up,” chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Thursday.

8/01/25 Ken Rosenthal Savagely Blasts Red Sox For Trade Deadline Failures. The trade deadline has come and gone, and nearly everybody agrees that the Boston Red Sox were one of the biggest losers. Boston got lefty reliever Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals. They got Dustin May, a rental starter with a 4.85 ERA, from the Los Angeles Dodgers. And they came up empty in their pursuit of Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan, potentially losing out on other opportunitites in the process. That's bad enough on the surface, but if the Red Sox just look around at what their rivals hauled in, they have to feel even worse. The New York Yankees added seven players, the Toronto Blue Jays added four, and every other team in the American League Wild Card race added meaningfully. If

7/31/25 7-Year MLB Veteran Wants To Join Red Sox. Time is running out for the Boston Red Sox to add another piece ahead of the 2025 Major League Baseball trade deadline. Boston acquired Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals late Wednesday night and now there is just a few hours to go until the trade deadline. Rumors have swirled all week about different starting pitchers the Red Sox have shown interest in but as of writing, a deal hasn't been agreed to. Most of the noise has been about big-name targets like Sandy Alcántara, Merrill Kelly, Zac Gallen, and Dylan Cease.

7/30/25 Steven Matz sent from St. Louis Cardinals to Boston Red Sox in late Wednesday trade. The St. Louis Cardinals have traded another reliever. This time, Steven Matz is on the move, and out of St. Louis. The lefthander is now a member of the Boston Red Sox. 7/27/25 Cardinals blank Padres 3-0; benches clear after Contreras hit by pitch. With the trading deadline less than a week away, other teams are expected to have interest in at least four relievers on the Cardinals. 7/26/25 Dodgers-Cardinals Blockbuster? Brendan Donovan Trade Rumors Heating Up. The St. Louis Cardinals have a lot of tough decisions to make at the trade deadline. Players like Steven Matz, Ryan Helsley, and Phil Maton are likely to be traded, as they're all on expiring contracts. It's unclear who the Cardinals will trade each of these pitchers to, but it seems increasingly likely they're going to be moved. Beyond the expiring players, who could the Cardinals look to trade?

7/17/25 Mets Predicted To Consider Blockbuster Trade For Cardinals Flamethrower. The St. Louis Cardinals have a solid bullpen this season with multiple relievers who could be shopped before the trade deadline and the New York Mets might be heavily interested. For instance, left-handed pitcher Steven Matz and right-handed pitcher Phil Maton have been exceptional in the Cardinals' bullpen this season. With both veteran hurlers on expiring contracts, there's a solid chance they could be dealt before the July 31 trade deadline.

6/30/25 Cardinals $44 Million Star Generating Shocking Trade Buzz. The St. Louis Cardinals are in a bit of a tough spot this season. This puts the front office in a weird spot. R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports recently listed Cardinals reliever Steven Matz as one of the top 25 trade chips of the offseason and even suggested "practically every contender" could be a potential landing spot for the lefty. The Cardinals could look to trade Matz whether or not they're contending if the price is right.

6/22/25 Dodgers Could Poach $44 Million Reliever From Cardinals Via Trade. The Los Angeles Dodgers are eyeing another title and will be looking to add at the trade deadline. With a depleted pitching staff due to injuries, the Dodgers must be scouring the market for versatile arms to bolster their bullpen. One intriguing option comes from the St. Louis Cardinals, a team teetering on the edge of playoff contention and open to moving veteran players, especially those on expiring deals. According to Thomas Harrigan of MLB.com, Steven Matz might be available.

6/22/25 Phillies Could Snag Cardinals Veteran Reliever On Trade Market. The Philadelphia Phillies are gearing up for the 2025 Major League Baseball trade deadline. Between now and July 31, Philadelphia's front office will be tasked with adding pieces to ensure World Series contention. Part of that blueprint must involve bullpen reinforcements, especially if the Phillies want to survive the gauntlet that promises to be the National League postseason. Philadelphia should be monitoring the St. Louis Cardinals as important sellers, especially as MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan recently identified 34-year-old reliever Steven Matz as a possible trade chip.

6/22/25 Yankees Could Pursue Trade For $44 Million Cardinals Reliever. The New York Yankees are looking to fortify their bullpen in preparation for another postseason run. Don't look now, but the Major League Baseball trade deadline is just a little over five weeks away. Could the Yanks call up the St. Louis Cardinals in the coming days and ask about a 34-year-old reliever? According to MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan, Steven Matz is a trade candidate, which could give New York reason to pursue.

6/20/25 Nolan Arenado Just Made History With Cardinals. The St. Louis Cardinals had a great day on Thursday. St. Louis had a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox and came out on top in both games. Steven Matz had a four-strikeout inning, Andre Granillo earned his first career win and save in the same day, and superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado became just the seventh player in Major League Baseball to blast 350 home runs and also rack up 10 Gold Gloves or more, as shared by the team.

6/19/25 Cardinals' Steven Matz joins Bob Gibson with historic 4-strikeout inning. The first member of this historic St. Louis Cardinals list makes sense. Bob Gibson had a four-strikeout inning back in 1966. The second member came Thursday and was much more unlikely: Steven Matz. MLB's Sarah Langs shared that the pairing forms the only two guys in Cardinals history to achieve such a rare feat. As you'll know, baseball innings only have three outs. But if a player reaches first on a dropped third strike, it counts as a strikeout without actually being an out in the inning. MORE: Yankees, John Elway were once the perfect baseball match The lefty Matz came on in relief in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader. He didn't even complete two full innings, but the one he completed

6/11/25 Cardinals' Breakout Veteran Predicted To Land On Trade Block. The St. Louis Cardinals are winning a lot of games this season, but they're still in the perfect position to rebuild their roster, especially if they can get some value out of potential trade pieces this summer. The Cardinals have the roster to compete in two or three years if everything goes perfectly to plan, but they might need to trade away a few of their valuable players this season to push their franchise in the right direction. Curt Bishop of FanSided recently suggested the Cardinals could use veteran pitcher Steven Matz as a trade chip before the trade deadline this season.

6/04/25 Cardinals Phenom 'Likely' To Get Next Big League Opportunity. The St. Louis Cardinals have a tough month ahead and are going to have to navigate the starting rotation. There isn't much time off this month, so the Cardinals are going to have to find a way to get through while keeping their starters healthy. When the Cardinals are in a similar situation earlier in the season, they shifted Steven Matz from the bullpen to the rotation. "One option that could be on the table for St. Louis is using Michael McGreevy as a spot starter in June," Woo said.
