Former Met Smith delivers winning hit in extras for Giants. Pinch-hitter Dominic Smith hit a tiebreaking RBI single against his former team in the 10th inning leading the San Francisco Giants to a 4-3 win over the New York Mets on Friday night. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Giants, who dealt relievers Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval, as well as outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, prior to Thursday's trade deadline. The Mets overcame a 3-0 deficit to force extra innings before losing their fourth straight game and falling out of first place in the National League East.

Pirates' Paul Skenes faces Rockies, looks to continue torrid stretch. The Pittsburgh Pirates aren't in the postseason hunt, but they do have a reason for optimism every fifth day when Paul Skenes takes the mound. Skenes (6-8) will take his majors-best 1.83 ERA into hitter-friendly Coors Field in Denver on Saturday afternoon when Pittsburgh continues its series against the Colorado Rockies. Skenes brings a 13-inning scoreless streak into the matchup against Colorado left-hander Austin Gomber (0-5, 6.28) on Saturday. Skenes will face the Rockies for the first time in his brief career and will try to restore some order for the Pirates, who squandered a 9-0 first-inning lead and lost 17-16 to Colorado on Friday night.

Pirates GM Shares Jaw-Dropping Yankees News. The New York Yankees were active during the MLB trade deadline, finding multiple relievers before closing shop and officially heading into the final stretch of the regular season. In the midst of their pitching moves was a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, acquiring David Bednar in exchange for catcher Rafael Flores, their No. 8 prospect, and first baseman Edgleen Perez, their No. 14 prospect. While on the surface, the trade received some criticism on Pittsburgh side, things are getting much worse. Speaking with the media about the deal, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington admitted he had an opportunity to receive a prospect with similar caliber to Bednar, but instead chose the two players instead.

Dodgers' Blake Snell set to return to face Rays. The Los Angeles Dodgers were relatively quiet at Thursday's MLB trade deadline, safe in the knowledge that several injured players would be returning soon. One of those players critical to the team's postseason hopes will rejoin the Dodgers when they continue their three-game series against the host Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. Left-hander Blake Snell (1-0, 2.00 ERA) is set to make his first start since April 2. Snell, 32, posted a 1.32 ERA with a 24-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in four minor league rehab starts covering 13 2/3 innings.

Rockies' stunning 17-16 comeback win over Pirates highlights huge night for offense across MLB. Colorado Rockies outfielder Brenton Doyle had a hard time describing what had just taken place after he delivered the crowning blow in perhaps the wildest game of the major league season. Doyle hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap Colorado’s stunning comeback from a nine-run deficit in a 17-16 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Colorado won despite allowing nine runs in the first inning. Elias Sports Bureau and MLB.com said this was the first time since 2006 that a team won a game after allowing nine runs in the first inning.

With the Twins struggling in the standings, he waived his no-trade clause to return to Houston. The Twins got minor-league pitcher Matt Mikulski. The also acquired outfielder Jesús Sánchez at Thursday's trade deadline. He was in the lineup Friday night batting third. Correa was at third base and batting cleanup.

Shea Langeliers hit a two-run homer in a four-run first inning and the Athletics beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 on Friday night. Brent Rooker had a sacrifice fly, Langeliers followed with his 19th home run and Carlos Cortez added a two-out RBI single as the A's built a 4-0 lead against Anthony DeSclafani. All he needed to do was advance Wilyer Abreu 90 feet to the plate. After Sousa opened with a pair of sliders, one for a called strike and the other a foul ball, Anthony was down in the count 0-and-2.

Andrew Benintendi had a double and a home run, Lenyn Sosa also homered among his two hits, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 on Friday night. White Sox starter Shane Smith gave up two runs and two hits while striking out four over 4 1/3 innings in his first start since July 11 following a stint on the 15-day IL. Jordan Leasure (4-6) earned the win in relief, striking out four in 1 2/3 innings.

Astros Planning Another Big Move After Ramon Urias Trade. The Houston Astros reportedly got some big infield help when they landed Ramon Urias from the Baltimore Orioles, and now could be turning their attention to the starting rotation. MLB.com reported that the Astros landed Urias in a deal that will send Single-A right-hander Twine Palmer to Baltimore. The 31-year-old utility infielder is coming off a two-homer game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday and has a slash line of .248/.300/.388 in 77 games this season.

The Marlins are the Best Story in Baseball, and You're Missing It. The Miami Marlins just keep winning, and it's about time we start taking them seriously. You haven't been watching as the Marlins have gone 28-14 over their last 42 games, the best record in the majors over that span. Much of Miami's magic was on full display Friday night, as the Marlins rallied from a 6-0 deficit to beat the New York Yankees by a score of 13-12 on a walkoff swinging bunt by Agustin Ramirez. After scoring four runs in the fifth inning to close the gap to 6-4, the Marlins watched as the Yankees responded with three more runs in the seventh to go up 9-4.

The Athletic's Jim Bowden handed the Red Sox a C-, the lowest grade in the American League East. The grade included the Rafael Devers trade in June, which didn't seem to help Boston get a higher grade, but also didn't hurt it. “Let's start with the shocking blockbuster in mid-June: I didn't think the Red Sox got enough in return for Rafael Devers, and believe they should have waited until the trade deadline to make the move, but I also understand they shed his massive contract and have played much better since the trade,” Bowden wrote.

From adding three highly touted bullpen arms, with the capper being trading for center fielder Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles, New York seems poised to capture its division crown in 10 years and go on another playoff run. Seattle reliever Trent Thornton was injured while coming off the mound on a ground ball in the ninth inning Thursday night and was carted off the field during the Mariners’ 6-0 win over the Texas Rangers. Thornton was using crutches to get around the Mariners’ locker room after the game and the team did not have an official diagnosis of the lower left leg injury he sustained on the grounder hit by Adolis Garcia with two outs.
