Cooper Criswell (P - BOS)

Red Sox Cooper Criswell, in first major league start of season, steps in and throws a gem. As a swingman who has been up and down from the minor leagues several times this season, Cooper Criswell's job is to be ready when he's called upon. When the team needs him, it's Criswell's job to provide multiple innings, or, as was the case Friday night, a spot start. With Richard Fitts optioned on the recent road trip and opening a temporary spot in the rotation, Criswell seized the opportunity and turned in what was likely the second-best start of his major league career. Criswell scattered seven hits over seven innings to the Houston Astros, allowing just one run in a game the Sox went on to win, 2-1, in 10 innings.

Diamondbacks' .362 Triple-A hitter forces Arizona's hand toward a trade or a promotion with funky contract move. The Arizona Diamondbacks are facing a fascinating contract conundrum. When they signed veteran Seth Brown earlier this offseason, the contract included an upward mobility clause, and Brown just triggered that clause on Thursday, according to MLB Trade Rumors. "That clause requires the Diamondbacks to notify all 29 other teams that Brown is available for anyone who wants to add him to their 40-man roster," writes MLB Trade Rumors.

Along with Pena, the team has called up right-handed pitcher Nick Hernandez, who will replace Ryan Gusto on the roster.

Whether that is due to Boston believing a trade acquisition will take his place in the rotation remains to be seen, but the club has been active in its pursuit of a playoff-caliber arm.

Yankees cut starter to make room for trade deadline acquisitions. With Luis Gil set to make his regular season debut on Sunday in Miami, something had to give in the Yankees' starting rotation. It's a risk with little starting pitching depth in Triple-A — the Yankees traded Carlos Carrasco away earlier this week and Allan Winans has struggled with the big-league club — but it gives those phenoms an opportunity to stick around as the Yankees enter the stretch run.
