Through the first half of the season, star closer Edwin Diaz was one of the New York Mets' most dominant performers. The hard-throwing righty is 21-for-23 in save opportunities and has a 1.55 ERA across 40.2 innings. The Mets have already suffered a string of season-ending injuries to their relief corps, contributing to the team having the fourth-highest team bullpen ERA in baseball. Closer Edwin Diaz has been great, and both Huascar Brazobán and José Buttó have been solid, though Buttó is now also on the IL. With the final pitch of the New York Mets' come-from-behind victory on Monday night, closer Edwin Diaz cemented his name in baseball's history books. Diaz recorded his 800th career strikeout in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Los Angeles Angels in the first game of their three-game set at Citi Field. According to a post from Mets' beat reporter Anthony DiComo, Diaz became the fourth-fastest pitcher to reach that mark. The easiest to fill would be adding help to their bullpen, which needs at least one more high leverage arm to get the game from the starting pitchers to All-Star closer Edwin Diaz. MLB Insider Jim Bowden released a column for The Athletic on Monday detailing what he has been hearing from all 30 teams prior to the deadline, and his sources have confirmed the Mets are heavily focused on the relief pitching market.
