6/20/25 Detroit Tigers officially release veteran reliever. Reliever John Brebbia was designated for assignment five days ago. (AP Photo/John Froschauer) AP By Evan Woodbery | ewoodber@mlive.com The Detroit Tigers have released veteran reliever John Brebbia. Brebbia, 35, had been designated for assignment on June 15 but was unlikely to be claimed on waivers due to his age and salary. The Tigers could not send him to the minors, so a release was always the likeliest outcome. He will now be free to sign with any team. 5/19/25 Tigers routed by Cardinals as rain delay extends gloomy night in St. Louis. It was a dismal night for the Detroit Tigers before the thunderstorms rolled through, and it didn't get any better after play resumed. The St. Louis Cardinals piled up 16 hits, and the Tigers struck out 11 times in the first seven innings of an 11-4 loss on Monday night at Busch Stadium. The game was delayed in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Cardinals leading 5-0 as a line of storms moved through the area. Reliever John Brebbia gave up five hits -- two singles, two doubles, and a Pedro Pages homer -- in a span of six batters as the Cardinals stretched the lead to 11-0.

4/20/25 Tigers place RHP John Brebbia (triceps) on IL. The Detroit Tigers placed right-hander John Brebbia on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a right triceps strain and recalled left-hander Bailey Horn from Triple-A Toledo. The move comes one day after the Tigers placed right-handed reliever Beau Brieske (ankle) on the IL. Brebbia, 34, was 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA in eight relief appearances this season. Over eight major league seasons with five different clubs, he is 16-21 with a 3.73 ERA in 362 appearances (21 starts). Horn, 27, has just 18 major league appearances, all in relief with the Boston Red Sox last season, when he went 1-1 with a 6.50 ERA. –Field Level Media

4/07/25 Detroit Tigers Newest Reliever Not Celebrating Hot Start Quite Yet. The Detroit Tigers took the second game of a three-game weekend set against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, winning by a final score of 7-2. Right handed reliever John Brebbia came in for the eighth and ninth innings and retired the White Sox in order across both frames to cap off the win. The righty was actually a member of Chicago's bullpen last season, ultimately being cut by the team in the midst of one of the worst seasons in MLB history. According to Evan Woodbery of Michigan Live (subscription required), Brebbia laughed at the notion that his stellar performance was any sort of revenge against the team that cut him.

7/04/24 Twenty-six days and counting for White Sox to trade deadline. The White Sox know it as well, if not better, than most, hearing their names on MLB Network and reading them in in print or on the Internet. “You see it on the TV all the time,” said Sox reliever John Brebbia, whose nice run of pitching in June could make him an appealing target to a contending team. Players like Brebbia, Erick Fedde and shortstop Paul DeJong, who hit his 16th homer in the Sox' game against the Guardians Sunday, have taken it in stride, but it definitely has their attention.

5/29/24 John Brebbia hopes to snap his bad luck pitching in torrential downpours. John Brebbia has become too accustomed to walking to home plate, grabbing a new baseball, walking it back to the mound while protecting it in his glove and getting it back over home plate as quickly as possible. That’s the routine Brebbia has adapted while playing through three torrential downpours in May, two of them more severe and memorable than...

5/05/24 Cards look to rebound after missed opportunity vs. White Sox. St. Louis loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the 10th inning before White Sox reliever John Brebbia struck out Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn as a torrential downpour hit Busch Stadium. Brebbia recorded a strike on Nolan Gorman before he walked off the mound and protested the rapidly deteriorating conditions. "The at-bats obviously needed to be better," Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said.

5/04/24 White Sox game in rain delay with one out left in extra innings. The White Sox encountered a rain delay in St. Louis at an extremely inconvenient moment. The officials called for the grounds crew to roll out the tarps in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the White Sox were one out away from winning the game. John Brebbia has an 0-1 count on Nolan Gorman with two outs in possibly...

4/08/24 White Sox' John Brebbia lands on injured list; Jared Shuster recalled from Charlotte. White Sox right-handed reliever John Brebbia landed the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 6) with a right calf strain Monday and the club recalled left-hander Jared Shuster from Triple-A Charlotte. The expectation is that Brebbia, who had a recurrence Friday in Kansas City of a calf strain suffered during spring training, will return by April 22. “It's not as bad as the one in the spring,” manager Pedro Grifol said. Brebbia has appeared in four games, logging 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
