7/06/25 Diamondbacks put Ryan Thompson on IL, recall Bryce Jarvis. The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed relief pitcher Ryan Thompson on the 15-day injured list and recalled pitcher Bryce Jarvis from Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Thompson was placed on the IL retroactive to Saturday with a scapular strain in his shoulder. This has been an up-and-down season for Thompson after he provided much stability in the bullpen in 2023-24.

6/29/25 D-backs' Bullpen Nightmare Fuels Costly Sweep by Marlins. It's not easy for a team to win a baseball game when they issue 10 walks. The Arizona Diamondbacks were not exceptions to that statement on Sunday, losing 6-4 to the Miami Marlins in a brutal sweep. Through the first 7.2 innings of the contest, Eduardo Rodríguez and Ryan Thompson each issued three walks. Jalen Beeks walked four in his second straight blowup outing.

5/22/25 Ryan Thompson's Woes Deepen Pressure on D-backs' Relief Corps. When looking at the Arizona Diamondbacks' bullpen, one of the pitchers who has underperformed expectations this season is right-hander Ryan Thompson. In his first 19 appearances, Thompson has a 7.50 ERA and -0.6 bWAR. Once a key piece in the 2023 bullpen that went on a strong run and fueled Arizona's run to the World Series, he's become the face of the unit's 2025 struggles. FIP takes into account the four true outcomes: strikeouts, hit-by-pitches, non-intentional walks, and home runs, while xERA incorporates quality of contact metrics to go with strikeout and walk rates.

5/17/25 D-backs' coach Jeff Banister ejected in loss vs. Rockies. Moments after Diamondbacks' reliever Ryan Thompson was tagged with a balk and three runs on Saturday against the Colorado Rockies, tempers flared between the Arizona dugout and the entire umpire crew, ending in the ejection of bench coach Jeff Banister in the seventh inning. In an unbelievable back-and-forth contest — with 24 combined runs through seven frames — Thompson entered with a slim 11-10 lead and left trailing 13-11. In only 0.2 innings, he allowed two singles and two home runs to Jordan Beck and Michael Toglia.

11/05/24 Arizona Diamondbacks 2024 Player Review: Ryan Thompson. This article is part of a series chronicling the individual seasons of players who appeared for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2024. Reviews for players who still have rookie eligibility for 2025 will appear in our prospect season reviews. When the Diamondbacks signed right-handed reliever Ryan Thompson to a minor league deal midway through the 2023 season, no one, except perhaps general manager Mike Hazen, had any idea of how impactful the move would be. Thompson brought consistent stability to Arizona's bullpen, immediately stepping into a high-leverage role, with his devastating arsenal and confounding sidearm angle baffling opposing hitters and pitching to a stellar 0.69 ERA with the D-backs in the regular season.

8/31/24 Why did Diamondbacks go to Paul Sewald in key moment of loss to Dodgers?. In a shootout 10-9 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, the Arizona Diamondbacks had to make some tough decisions with the bullpen. Ryan Thompson was unavailable and manager Torey Lovullo wanted to stay away from Justin Martinez, as the duo had pitched in each of the previous two games. Starter Zac Gallen did not have great feel for his pitches early, although he gutted out five innings and left with the two sides tied 5-5. The biggest moment for the bullpen came in the seventh inning when Paul Sewald entered down 6-5 with two runners on and one out.

8/03/24 Diamondbacks to manage "fluid" closer situation. Ryan Thompson received the first nod to close a game after Paul Sewald's removal from the closer role on Friday, and although it wasn't perfect, Thompson recorded his second straight save. Thompson has been the D-backs' eighth inning man setting up Sewald all season, and he came to the rescue on Wednesday with the bases loaded and one out to salvage a sweep of the Nationals.

8/01/24 D-backs face Pirates playing up to 'expectation'. The Arizona Diamondbacks would like to see their scintillating play in July carry over into August when they open a three-game series against the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. Winners in 17 of 25 games last month, the Diamondbacks closed July with a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals to move a season-high seven games over .500. Arizona went into MLB play Thursday occupying the third and final wild-card spot in the National League. "I think this is what we expected from the beginning of the season," Diamondbacks reliever Ryan Thompson said after the team's 5-4 victory over the Nationals on Wednesday.

10/11/23 Ryan Thompson turns season around after joining Diamondbacks. Less than two months ago, Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Ryan Thompson was out of a job. In three appearances, he's surrendered zero runs and one hit in 4.0 innings. “I'm just trying to execute and give my team a chance to make a play behind me,” Thompson said after the D-backs' 4-2 victory Monday over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Before arriving in the desert to play for the D-backs, the 31-year-old reliever had appeared in just more than 100 games in the big leagues with the Rays after arriving in Tampa in 2018 as a Rule 5 selection from the Houston Astros.

4/05/23 Rays beat Nationals, extend season-opening win streak to 6 games. What the Rays have done during their record-setting run to open the season is impressive enough. Wednesday, they stretched their winning streak to six games and extended their stay as the only undefeated — and best — team in the majors with a 7-2 win over the Nationals. “Oh my gosh, we've got some real serious magic on this team,” reliever Ryan Thompson said. “We should be very pleased with the way that we've played — the consistency defensively, on the mound, at the plate,” manager Kevin Cash said.

3/16/23 Rays’ Ryan Thompson testing limits of pitch clock rules. ST. PETERSBURG — Reliever Ryan Thompson sees spring training as a chance to not just get used to the new pitch clock rules, but to see what he can get away with. “I think a lot of us are just trying to test the boundaries of these new rules and try to see what is allowed and what isn’t,” Thompson said. Thursday, that included trying to quick pitch Braves catcher Travis d’Arnaud, delivering the ...

2/23/23 Rays’ Ryan Thompson reviews, criticizes MLB’s arbitration process. LAKE BUENA VISTA — When reliever Ryan Thompson found out he had lost his arbitration case to the Rays, he said he was “absolutely” disappointed in the result. But Thompson had more — much ...
