In a win-now year, the Mets have struggled of late to find the right high-leverage formula in front of closer Edwin Díaz. One Mets writer believes New York should go after a Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander having an unexpected career year--one who also spent a brief stint in 2023 with the Mets. On Tuesday, Tim Boyle of FanSided named Pirates reliever Dennis Santana as a top prospective trade target for the Mets' bullpen ahead of the Jul. 31 deadline.

7/05/25 Phillies Have 'Inquired' About Pair of Pirates Bullpen Arms. Bullpen is going to be addressed by the Philadelphia Phillies at some point. Knowing that unit needs to be upgraded, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski will be searching for ways to improve the relief staff before the July 31 trade deadline. According to Noah Hiles of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (subscription required), Philadelphia "has inquired" about Dennis Santana and David Bednar of the Pittsburgh Pirates, with Santana being their primary target since they "have thought highly of Santana for quite some time."

6/24/25 Reason Revealed for Pirates Pitcher's Fan Fight. A Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher recently got himself in an altercation with fans, with reasons now known why. Pirates right-handed relief pitcher Dennis Santana got into it with a fan near the bullpen in their second game of a doubleheader and the series finale vs. the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reported that the Tigers said they ejected the fan from the ballpark. Santana went in and pitched the bottom of the ninth inning vs. the Tigers, but a more than 75 minute rain delay meant that Pirates manager Don Kelly went with right-handed pitcher David Bednar once play resumed.

6/21/25 MLB Suspends Former Yankees Pitcher. The MLB is shutting down former New York Yankees pitcher Dennis Santana for four games following an altercation with a fan during a game. The now Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher got into an argument with fans during a game against the Detroit Tigers, where he attempted to hit the fans involved. Sanatana was involved in an altercation with fans outside of the bullpen during a doubleheader against the Tigers at Comerica Park. According to reports from The Athletic, the Tigers ejected the fan from the ballpark.

In videos of the altercation, Santana is seen having an argument with fans before jumping up from the bullpen and swinging his arms at them. Pirates staff, a fellow player and a local police officer then pull Santana away. The fans were later ejected from Comerica Park.

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Dennis Santana was involved in an altercation with a fan who ‘crossed the line’ during the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers and at one point was seen leaping and swiping at the person. Santana declined to disclose what the fan said. In videos posted to social media, Santana can be seen pointing out the fan to a police officer before jumping and swinging at the person who is in the front row above the Pittsburgh bullpen at Comerica Park. Santana was escorted away by Pirates bullpen personnel and held back by a teammate.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported that the Pirates won their arbitration hearing against right-handed relief pitcher Dennis Santana. With the arbitration deadline coming to pass, the Pittsburgh Pirates still have two pitchers they haven't agreed to a contract with for the 2025 season. Pittsburgh couldn't reach a deal with right-handed pitchers Dennis Santana and Johan Oviedo. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported that the Pirates filed at $850,000, while Oviedo filed at $1.15 million. Pittsburgh was further apart with Santana, as the right-handed relief pitched filed at $2.1 million, as opposed to $1.4 million by the Pirates, per Feinsand.

The New York Yankees won't get pitcher Dennis Santana back as he was claimed off waivers on Tuesday by the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team announced. The Yankees designated Santana for assignment on Sunday to make room for pitcher Ron Marinaccio.
