7/26/25	Job of Orioles Boss 'Could Be in Jeopardy' Depending on How Trade Deadline Goes. Mike Elias has done a tremendous job of getting the Baltimore Orioles to this current point. The ability of him and his baseball operations staff to identify and develop talent has been second to none during this stretch, and that ability created the opportunity for the Orioles to shock everyone in 2023 when they won 101 games and the AL East division after winning less than 55 contests in two out of the three full seasons prior to that year. In 2023, it was the rotation that wasn't ready for October, with the staff getting shelled to the point where they were easily discarded by the Texas Rangers in a three-game sweep. Arizona is now 50-52 with just seven games to play before the trade deadline. Pfaadt is the latest D-backs starter to hope his recent success hasn't been a fluke. Arizona Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes has never gone through an elongated injury recovery before, but he is making an effort to stay involved where he can. Burnes said he is watching every game, and not having to worry about his next start for another 12-14 months (by his estimation) allows him to see the game a bit differently when watching his teammates, particularly the pitchers. Arizona's starting pitching woes. After the aggressive move to sign Corbin Burnes, he went down with Tommy John surgery after 11 starts. Meanwhile, Zac Gallen, Eduardo Rodriguez and Brandon Pfaadt each have an ERA on the wrong side of 5.00. The Arizona Diamondbacks have suffered what appears to be an unprecedented level of major pitching injuries in their franchise history. Despite having the third best offense in the league, the D-backs are 4.5 out of the third NL Wild Card spot with four teams in front of them. The various websites that calculate playoff odds now give the D-backs between a 13% to 21% chance to make the playoffs. Not having a viable starting rotation and bullpen has been a major reason why this team has performed in such a disappointing manner, with the idea of them competing for a World Series championship and division title ending virtually as soon as the season began. While they offered Corbin Burnes a contract that would have made him the highest-paid pitcher on an AAV basis in Major League Baseball history, they didn't do much to replace him when he decided to sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks instead. 6/25/25	Arizona Diamondbacks fighting their way through a rash of injuries. The Arizona Diamondbacks have been snakebit all season. Injuries plagued the club in spring training and have continued to wreak havoc as the season reaches the midpoint, leaving manager Torey Lovullo searching for answers as he tries to cobble together a daily lineup. Arizona already lost pitchers Corbin Burnes, Jordan Montgomery, A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez to season-ending elbow injuries. Catcher Gabriel Moreno also is out with a broken finger. The Diamondbacks placed outfielder Corbin Carroll on the injured list with a broken wrist, then watched infielder Ildemaro Vargas go down with a broken foot. There's always a risk when it comes to making trades, and Mike Elias and the Baltimore Orioles were firmly feeling that after last year's deadline heading into this season. With injuries mounting during the 2024 campaign and some underlying pressure existing to not waste the lone year of Corbin Burnes prior to him hitting free agency, the Orioles made two deals for starting pitchers; landing Zach Eflin from the Tampa Bay Rays and Trevor Rogers from the Miami Marlins. 6/23/25	This Statistic Shockingly Suggests Orioles Have Overperformed This Year. Despite the questionable offseason the Baltimore Orioles had, they were still expected to compete for an AL East title and a spot in the playoffs. While there were few who expected them to actually win a World Series championship after they lost their ace Corbin Burnes and star slugger Anthony Santander without adequately replacing them, the consensus thinking was that there is still too much talent on this roster for them not to at least be playing October baseball. Well, almost halfway through the year, the Orioles find themselves 11 games under .500 on the outside of the playoff picture looking in having already lost their manager because of how poorly they played to start the season. Routinely listed as one of the most disappointing teams in Major League Baseball -- if not the most -- based on how they have performed thus far, there's a chance Baltimore could actually have a worse record than do right now. Following consecutive playoff appearances, the Orioles are last in the American League East at 33-43. A promising lineup has fallen short of expectations, and the rotation remains a massive concern after losing Corbin Burnes in free agency and Grayson Rodriguez to a preseason elbow injury. The bullpen has also struggled, entering Sunday with a 4.47 team ERA . They sent down a prominent under-performing reliever, optioning Yennier Cano to Triple-A.
