He was once the best pitching prospect in the game, and was also dumped last week for next to nothing. Now, all these years later, Forrest Whitley just wants the chance to be the one thing that has mostly eluded him: A dependable big-league pitcher. Whitley was acquired by the Rays in a ...

The long-time star prospect was expected to be the next ace of this franchise when he was coming up the ranks. But after a suspension and multiple injuries, it took the 2016 first-round pick until 2024 to make his Major League debut. Even then, Whitley left everyone wanting to see more. 3/01/25 Former Houston Astros Top Prospect Heating Up During Spring Training. The Houston Astros have had an extremely intriguing offseason, making plenty of additions to their roster while also making moves to let some key players go. With those two leaving, it has opened up some spots for others to make their name known, and one player who has been doing so in spring training is Forrest Whitley. The 2016 first-round pick for the Astros has taken a decent amount of time to get to the Majors for a myriad of different reasons, but he made his long-awaited debut on April 16 last year. 10/23/24 Next Year Is Now or Never for Former Houston Astros Top Prospect. Forrest Whitley has been a player that is one of the greatest "what-ifs" for Houston Astros fans ever since they took him 17th overall in the 2016 MLB draft. Early on, it looked like Whitley was going to be a future ace of this staff when he posted a 2.83 ERA with 143 strikeouts across 92.1 innings pitched in his first full season of professional baseball. It's well documented that Whitley had his struggles, getting suspended for 50 games in 2018 after violating the MLB's drug prevention and treatment program, and then undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2021. Since then, it's been a battle for the pitcher who was the Astros' No. 1 overall prospect from 2018-21.

9/01/24 Houston Astros Give Long-Time Prospect Another Shot As September Call-Up. With the final month of the regular season now here, the Houston Astros sit five games up on the Seattle Mariners and look to be well on their way to taking home another AL West division crown. Because the Astros are in contention for the playoffs and have a roster poised to make another deep run, their September call-ups don't mean as much for the long-term viability of the franchise as others around the league who are wanting to see what their young players can do. Instead, Houston will be looking to fortify this group by taking advantage of the expanded rosters. As can be gatherer from their social media post, they are giving long-time prospect Forrest Whitley another opportunity in the Majors after he was called up to throw in one game back on April 16.
