8/01/25 Red Sox lineup: Slumping first baseman in cleanup spot in opener vs. Astros. Boston Red Sox's Abraham Toro celebrates after his two-RBI double during the second inning of a baseball game against the Colorado Rockies at Fenway Park, Monday, July 7, 2025, in Boston. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa) AP By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com BOSTON — First baseman Abraham Toro will bat cleanup for Boston on Friday despite struggling in July. The Red Sox and Astros will play the first game of a three-game series at Fenway Park at 7:10 p.m. The game will air on Apple TV+. Toro batted .221 with a .295 on-base percentage, .279 slugging percentage, .574 OPS and just four extra-base hits (all doubles) in 21 games (78 plate appearances) during July. He has just 10 hits in his last 55

7/24/25 Red Sox Predicted To Bring $11 Million First Base Slugger To Boston. The Boston Red Sox should be solidified as trade deadline buyers. Now, the question is what they can get. ESPN's Jeff Passan raised eyebrows on Wednesday with a suggestion that the Red Sox could have a fairly boring deadline. They've publicly stated that they want to add "impact" starting pitching, but the market looks awfully pricy for anyone under contract beyond 2025. But the problem the Red Sox haven't talked enough about is first base, where Abraham Toro has cooled off dramatically as the left-handed half of the platoon. That was to be expected, based on Toro's career trajectory, and it would be prudent to add a veteran first baseman with a more reliable bat. That's where Josh Naylor of

7/19/25 Red Sox Rumors: Trade For Orioles All-Star Slugger 'Might Happen'. The Boston Red Sox need a better left-handed hitting first baseman if they want to be serious World Series contenders this season. No disrespect intended to Abraham Toro, who stepped up in a major way in late May and early June when the Red Sox needed a boost. The platoon with Toro and Romy Gonzalez has mostly worked out for Boston, but they'd be wise to move on before the results get even uglier.

7/19/25 4 first base options that can transform Red Sox at MLB trade deadline. With diminishing returns coming from Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez, the Red Sox need to make a trade for a first baseman if they hope to compete in the second half. Washington Nationals first baseman Nathaniel Lowe rounds the bases after hitting a home run versus the Boston Red Sox.

7/18/25 Red Sox reactions: Baserunning blunder, early hole ends 10-game win streak. CHICAGO — Instant reactions from the Red Sox ' 4-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday. 1) Boston's 10-game winning streak ended. The Red Sox dropped to 53-46 while the Cubs improved to 58-39. 2) Abraham Toro made an inexcusable baserunning mistake in the fifth inning. He singled to lead off the frame and moved to second base on Jarren Duran's walk. But he got doubled off second base for the first out of the inning on Alex Bregman's 324-foot lineout to center field. Toro's error proved costly as Roman Anthony, the next hitter, walked. Had Toro remained on base, the Red Sox would have had the bases loaded down 3-1 with just one out. 3) Starter Lucas Giolito's 30-pitch first inning

7/17/25 Could First Base Upgrade Become Red Sox's Deadline Focus?. Chaos is the currency of the deadline, and the Boston Red Sox are one of several clubs spending big. Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez have held down first base admirably since Triston Casas was sidelined for the season in early May. They are hitting .298 with 10 HR and 48 RBI combined, while Gonzalez has been one of baseball's best against left-handed pitching (.406, 4 HR, 16 RBI). Here are a few names the Red Sox could go after. The Baltimore first baseman is putting together a breakout year, showing better command of the strike zone while maintaining his power numbers.

6/28/25 Red Sox lineup: Slumping third baseman (.176 past 15 games) batting third. BOSTON — Abraham Toro will bat third in the Red Sox lineup Saturday despite a two-week slump. The Red Sox will try to end a losing streak that reached six games when they lost 9-0 to Toronto on Friday . Boston managed just four hits. Toro is 9-for-51 (.176) with a .236 on-base percentage, .275 slugging percentage, one homer, two doubles and three RBIs in five games dating back to June 9. His line has dropped from .333/.352/.563/.915 to .278/.307/.459/.766 during the slump. Carlos Narváez is back behind the plate and batting cleanup after a day off Friday. Roman Anthony will bat second and serve as the DH. Nick Sogard is at second base and Romy Gonzalez will play first base. Boston is 3-7 since

6/12/25 Red Sox Journeyman Emerges As Highly Unexpected All-Star Candidate. The Boston Red Sox have been making strides lately. The Red Sox have won two consecutive series against the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays, respectively. One player turning heads is infielder Abraham Toro, whose breakout performance has even sparked All-Star buzz. Toro's scorching hot June and impressive season stats have positioned him as a legitimate write-in candidate for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game, a development few saw coming when he signed a minor league deal in January.

6/09/25 Why Yankees' Aaron Boone isn't concerned with reliever's sudden home run bug. In a span of four outings this month, Jonathan Loáisiga has allowed four home runs out of the Yankees' bullpen. Loáisiga gave up back-to-back solo homers to lead off the eighth in Sunday's 11-7 loss to the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Third baseman Abraham Toro worked an eight-pitch at-bat against Loáisiga to start that inning, fouling off three pitches before crushing a fastball over the heart of the plate into the second deck in right. Three pitches later, shortstop Trevor Story went the other way on a 1-1 sinker at the bottom of the zone for a short-porch shot.

6/07/25 Red Sox getting unexpected production from a player no one saw coming. The Boston Red Sox have been a disappointment, which is the term used in polite company. When it reaches the stage of death threats, the situation goes from frustrating to dangerous. The roster has collected its fair share of diamonds in the rough, or hidden potential not yet realized. The latest is Abraham Toro, who has an MLB history that screams Quad-A.

6/05/25 Red Sox fill-in first baseman hitting .304 after choosing Boston over Yankees as free agent. The Red Sox' signing of veteran infielder Abraham Toro on January 28 wasn't met with much fanfare. Fans had their sights set on much bigger-name infielders like Nolan Arenado and Alex Bregman during that antsy point of the winter, anyway, and Toro looked like little more than Triple-A depth in what was already a crowded infield mix. Five months later, though, Toro has been a rare bright spot for an underperforming Red Sox team. After not being seriously considered for the Opening Day roster and beginning the year in Triple-A, the 28-year-old has done his best Dom Smith impression in the wake of Triston Casas' season-ending knee injury and given the Red Sox a little something since being called up on May 3.

5/31/25 Red Sox lineup: Fill-in first baseman with .843 OPS starting again vs. Braves. ATLANTA — The Red Sox don't exactly know yet how they're going to fill the Triston Casas-sized hole at first base for the rest of the season. In the interim, though, veteran Abraham Toro has stepped in admirably. Toro, who with a three-hit game Friday is now hitting .294 with an .843 OPS for Boston, is starting at first base and hitting sixth in Saturday's game at Truist Park. It's the fifth time in six games he's in the lineup . Toro started off slow after being called up May 3 , hitting just .192 in his first eight games. But he's 10-for-25 (.400) with two homers, three doubles and a 1.160 OPS for the Red Sox in his last eight games. The Red Sox will run back the same lineup Saturday after

5/21/25 Boston Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer reminds veteran of 5-time All-Star SS. Both the way 22-year-old shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer swings the bat and plays defense looks almost effortless to Red Sox first baseman Abraham Toro. “It kind of looks nonchalant,” said Toro, who played with Mayer in Triple-A Worcester before his call-up May 3. Toro compared Baseball America's No. 8 overall prospect to a five-time All-Star shortstop. “It's so relaxed,” Toro said.

5/08/25 Alex Cora Offers Encouraging Injury Update On Red Sox Infielder. It appears the Red Sox won't have to find a quick option at first base following an injury scare Wednesday. Romy González left Boston's win over the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park in the sixth inning after a scary collision with Josh Smith at first base. Abraham Toro finished the game in relief of the veteran. Alex Cora told reporters Thursday that González was “sore” but doing OK, per The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.

1/28/25 Red Sox adding veteran free agent INF (365 MLB games) on minor league deal. With just about two weeks to go before spring training gets underway in Fort Myers, the Red Sox are closing in on making a veteran addition to their list of non-roster camp invitees. Boston is putting the finishing touches on a minor league contract with veteran infielder Abraham Toro, a source confirmed Tuesday. Daniel Alvarez Montes of El Extra Base first reported an agreement, with Toro himself confirming on his Instagram story. Toro, a 28-year-old Canada native, has appeared in 365 big league games with four teams (Houston, Seattle, Milwaukee and Oakland) since debuting in 2019.
