8/02/25 Pirates Didn't Tell All-Star Closer They Traded Him. The Pittsburgh Pirates traded one of their longest tenured relief pitchers ahead of the deadline, but didn't provide the best communication with him. The Pirates traded right-handed relief pitcher David Bednar to the New York Yankees on July 31, receiving a trio of propsects back in their biggest move at the deadline. Bednar spoke with the Yankees reporter Meredith Markovits of the YES Network about joining the team and said he found out he got traded from social media and not from the Pirates front office.

8/02/25 Pirates GM Shares Jaw-Dropping Yankees News. The New York Yankees were active during the MLB trade deadline, finding multiple relievers before closing shop and officially heading into the final stretch of the regular season. In the midst of their pitching moves was a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, acquiring David Bednar in exchange for catcher Rafael Flores, their No. 8 prospect, and first baseman Edgleen Perez, their No. 14 prospect. While on the surface, the trade received some criticism on Pittsburgh side, things are getting much worse. Speaking with the media about the deal, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington admitted he had an opportunity to receive a prospect with similar caliber to Bednar, but instead chose the two players instead.

Fortifying their bullpen for the stretch run, the New York Yankees acquired All-Star relievers David Bednar and Camilo Doval in separate deals as they made a flurry of moves Thursday just ahead of baseball’s trade deadline. The Yankees also added reliever Jake Bird from Colorado and speedy utilityman José Caballero from Tampa Bay — right in the middle of their game against the Rays. According to MLB analyst Francys Romero, the Yankees were in talks to secure Pirates reliever David Bednar, but the teams weren't able to reach a deal. Pittsburgh's asking price for Bednar is apparently sky-high, with Romero reporting that the team was looking for three players in return for the closer.

Bednar earned his 100th career save in the 2-0 shutout victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at PNC Park on July 26, throwing a sensational ninth inning in front of a home crowd of 27,425.

7/16/25 Mets-Pirates trade proposal brings 2-time All-Star to New York. The New York Mets are set up to be buyers at the trade deadline. They need southpaws in the bullpen, but may not limit themselves to just lefties if they are adding relievers. The Mets' bullpen has a 3.83 ERA this season. Edwin Díaz has been lights out as the team's closer this year. However, he has an opt-out after this season, and the Mets may be interested in adding a closer with control to potentially replace Díaz next year, and serve as his setup man this season.
