8/02/25 Padres Make Massive Michael King Announcement Hinting at Impending Return. The San Diego Padres announced starting pitcher Michael King will take a significant step towards his return to the rotation, as he will make a rehab start for Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. King landed on the injured list May 25 after being scratched from his May 24 start against the Atlanta Braves with right shoulder inflammation, though was later diagnosed with a pinched nerve. The Padres made two additions to their rotation at the trade deadline in JP Sears and Nestor Cortes, and King will be another solid addition to their arsenal. Before his injury, King had performed at an even better level than last year, where he placed seventh in NL Cy Young voting.

7/27/25 Padres' Dylan Cease, Michael King Could Land With AL Powerhouse in Blockbuster Trade, Says Insider. The Athletic's Jim Bowden revealed the Toronto Blue Jays are in for pitchers at the trade deadline, and could target the expiring contracts of San Diego Padres starters Michael King and Dylan Cease. The Blue Jays are currently first in the NL East and have the best record in baseball, however their pitching staff sits firmly in the middle of the road among other MLB teams.

7/25/25 Padres Make Massive Michael King Announcement as Return Nears. The San Diego Padres were given a major boost in the National League West race after the organization got a positive update regarding starting pitcher Michael King's status. According to team insider Dennis Lin, King is set to throw a simulated game on Monday at Petco Park, making his return to pitching since injuring his shoulder. King got scratched from a game in May after he woke up and felt discomfort in his right shoulder. Out of caution, the Padres scratched him from the game, though he hasn't thrown since then.

On Aug. 20, the San Diego Padres will giveaway a bobblehead that features starting pitcher Michael King, and the injured right-hander reportedly said he will be ready to pitch before the big night. “I'll be back well before that,” King said to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The Padres placed King on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation on May 25. After undergoing MRI exams, King's shoulder was determined to have no structural damage.

The Athletic's Dennis Lin believes the San Diego Padres may have trouble keeping starting pitcher Michael King after he enters free agency following the 2025 season. The right-hander has a $15 million mutual option for the 2026 season in his contract, however he is likely to decline considering his performances this season and the amount he would likely fetch in free agency. Spotrac believes King is worth a four-year, $71 million contract.

The San Diego Padres right-handed starting pitcher went down with shoulder inflammation in his throwing arm, landing on the 15-day injured list on May 25. The San Diego Padres are currently tied for a National League Wild Card spot, but with just about half of the season left, the Friars are far from satisfied. As is the case with plenty of teams around baseball in he buyer's market, the San Diego Padres are looking for help in their starting rotation. With Michael King out with an injury and Yu Darvish steadily returning to the mound, the Padres need to consider adding a starter. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report linked the Padres to a starter. Rymer called the Padres a "favorite" to land Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Walker Buehler at the trade deadline.
