7/30/25 | Sean McAdam: Don't let the numbers fool you. Garrett Whitlock has been superb out of the Red Sox bullpen, and so has closer Aroldis Chapman. But the Red Sox need additional help if they're going to reach the playoffs. (Photo by Maddie Malhotra/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images) Getty Images By Sean McAdam | sean.mcadam@masslive.com MINNEAPOLIS — If you go simply at the data — and that's indeed how almost everything is judged in baseball these days — the Red Sox' bullpen performance has been among the best in the game this season. After night's 8-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins Tuesday night at Target Field, Red Sox relievers have compiled a 3.37 ERA. That ranks them second in the American League, behind only the Texas Rangers, and fourth overall Source: https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/07/dont-let-t... |
7/29/25 | Alex Cora Noncommittal on Rotation Construction Going Forward. The Boston Red Sox were victims of unfortunate circumstances on Monday against the Minnesota Twins. A turbulent plane ride made Garrett Whitlock unavailable, while Aroldis Chapman was also out due to back tightness. Jordan Hicks was forced to pitch the ninth inning for the second time in as many days, this time after a lengthy rain delay, before which he had already warmed up. Hicks couldn't find the zone, and the Twins walked off the Red Sox with a two-run single to win, 4-3. Source: https://nesn.com/2025/07/alex-cora-noncommittal-on... |
7/24/25 | Taking stock of the Red Sox a week out from the trade deadline: Did a 2-4 stretch change things? Will the next six games?. “I want to change the narrative,” reliever Garrett Whitlock said. “[The 10-game winning streak] was in the second half.” The winning streak came in games 89-98. “I think we showed we can play in a postseason game right now,” said Carlos Narváez. 7/24/25 | Red Sox righty said he'd be the janitor to stay in MLB; now he's a 'dude out of the bullpen' again. For years, Garrett Whitlock offered the same refrain when asked if he preferred to pitch out of the rotation or the bullpen for the Red Sox. Time after time, Whitlock said he'd be the team's janitor if it meant he'd remain in the majors. “We expect him to be out there and be a dude out of the bullpen,” manager Alex Cora said. Whitlock, somewhat quietly after returning from elbow (internal brace) surgery that ended his 2024 season after just four starts, has been that “dude.” Source: https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/07/red-sox-ri... |
7/03/25 | Red Sox's visit to President Trump at White House has fans perplexed. The president of the United States invites the World Series champions to the White House every year. Before their series against the Washington Nationals, Garrett Whitlock, Romy Gonzalez, and other Boston players took advantage of the off day manager Alex Cora gave them. 6/26/25 | Red Sox Player's Wife Shares Disturbing Social Media Threats To Family. Jordan Whitlock, the wife of Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock, shared troubling messages sent to them on social media. Garrett Whitlock, one of Boston's most reliable relievers for most of the season, allowed four runs in Monday's 9-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Jordan Whitlock posted threatening DMs sent to their family this week while addressing an on-field heckling incident. Source: https://nesn.com/2025/06/red-sox-players-wife-shar... |
6/15/25 | Garrett Whitlock Issues Aaron Judge Message After Red Sox Sweep Yankees. The Boston Red Sox are rolling, as they completed a sweep of their longtime nemesis, the New York Yankees, on Sunday afternoon. In perhaps the biggest play of their 2-0 win to close out the series, Garrett Whitlock got the better of Aaron Judge. Stepping up to the plate in the eighth inning, Judge had a chance to wipe the slate clean, as there were two runners on base with only one out in the inning. With the game in the balance, manager Alex Cora made a call to the bullpen and summoned Whitlock to face Judge. Source: https://nesn.com/2025/06/garrett-whitlock-aaron-ju... |
5/18/25 | Red Sox could sign this veteran free agent to reinforce struggling bullpen. Despite all their preseason expectations, the 2025 season has not gone to plan for the Boston Red Sox. The club can't break free of its .500 pattern, and is coming off a painful sweep against the Detroit Tigers, both indicative of Boston's inconsistent bullpen. While this has been a painful revelation for the Red Sox, it is made worse by Garrett Whitlock's sudden decline as a high-leverage reliever, a role in short supply for Boston. 5/16/25 | Garrett Whitlock of Red Sox honors late brother with song 'Bury Me in Georgia' when entering games. Red Sox reliever Garrett Whitlock has quietly found a way to honor his younger brother, who drowned nearly two years ago. When he enters from the bullpen at Fenway Park, the 28-year-old right-hander jogs to the mound with country artist Kane Brown’s song “Bury Me in Georgia” playing in the background. “When my brother did pass away, I would hear that song and it would remind me of him a lot,” Whitlock told The Associated Press while standing at his locker before Friday's game against Atlanta. 5/04/25 | Twins rally in late innings to take series from Red Sox. Without much offensive support all week, the Twins erased their two-run deficit in the seventh inning after Bader drew a leadoff walk against reliever Garrett Whitlock, and Christian Vázquez dropped a one-out single into center. Both runners moved a base on a Byron Buxton groundout, and Ryan Jeffers delivered a two-out, two-run single over the head of left fielder Jarren Duran. Jeffers clapped his hands and pumped his fist as he returned to first base. Source: https://www.startribune.com/minnesota-twins-rally-... |

4/24/25 | How Garrett Whitlock Embraced Return To Red Sox Role. The Boston Red Sox saw the best version of Garrett Whitlock in 2021 as a multi-inning reliever who changed the complexion of the bullpen. Whitlock posted a sub-2.00 ERA and he closed out the American League Wild Card Game against the New York Yankees. Boston then tried him as a starter for parts of three seasons that led to injuries and general regression. The Red Sox made the decision entering 2025 to push Whitlock back to the bullpen where he's started to find his way back to form. Source: https://nesn.com/2025/04/how-garrett-whitlock-embr... |
4/23/25 | Red Sox-Cardinals Blockbuster Trade Idea Ships $81M Two-Time All-Star To Boston. It's a great feeling for supporters of the Boston Red Sox to know their team will almost certainly be buyers at this year's trade deadline. It's Major League Baseball, so nothing should ever be taken for granted. When the deadline arrives, the Red Sox will likely concentrate their efforts on finding pitching. The Red Sox have three trustworthy relievers right now in Garrett Whitlock, Justin Slaten, and Aroldis Chapman. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/red-sox/boston-red-sox-news... |
4/17/25 | No matter the situation, Garrett Whitlock relishes role as 'Swiss Army Knife' of Red Sox bullpen. Whitlock faced seven batters in Wednesday's 1-0 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays. “He was electric,” manager Alex Cora said. All this with Whitlock only 10½ months removed from an internal brace procedure to repair a ligament tear in his elbow. A multi-inning role in high-leverage situations plays to Whitlock's strengths given he has made 23 starts in his career. Source: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2025/04/17/sports/garr... |
3/31/25 | Garrett Whitlock may have found his niche, and more thoughts on the Red Sox. Whitlock had a terrific rookie season as a Rule 5 pick in 2021, posting a 1.96 ERA over 46 relief appearances for a 92-win team that advanced to the ALCS. In the three seasons that followed, the righthander made 23 starts and 34 relief appearances. A series of injuries during those seasons sidetracked what appeared to be promising career to a point where a frustrated Whitlock considered retirement. The plan is to use Whitlock in a multi-inning role to serve as a bridge between the starter and the high-leverage relievers Cora wants to employ late in games. 3/27/25 | Mixing and matching with relievers, Red Sox' bullpen plan works like charm. Red Sox reliever Garrett Whitlock pitches during the sixth inning of the Opening Day game against the Texas Rangers on March 27, 2025 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Maddie Malhotra/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images) Getty Images By Sean McAdam | sean.mcadam@masslive.com ARLINGTON, Texas — Even as he proclaimed Aroldis Chapman as the Red Sox' primary closer earlier this week, Alex Cora was careful to note that there would be situations in which he would call on Chapman before the ninth inning, then turn elsewhere for the final three outs. It didn't take long to happen. In the season opener against the Texas Rangers, Cora seized the opportunity to show what he meant. 3/26/25 | Why This Talented Pitcher Has 'Hardest Job' In Red Sox Bullpen. Garrett Whitlock might be the greatest X-Factor on the roster for the Boston Red Sox in 2025 as he returns to the bullpen. 3/10/25 | Red Sox 28-Year-Old Surprisingly Considered Retirement Before Boston Deal. The Boston Red Sox made a great move ahead of the 2021 Major League Baseball season. Boston selected hurler Garrett Whitlock in the Rule-5 Draft and he immediately made a big impact with the Red Sox. Whitlock has had an up-and-down stint with the Red Sox since then thanks in large part due to injuries. One thing that is pretty shocking, though, is Whitlock shared that he considered retirement before joining Boston while speaking to Joe Castiglione, Rob Bradford, and Jackie Bradley Jr. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/red-sox/boston-red-sox-news... |
