7/30/25 | [NBC Sports Bay Area] - Athletics' Nick Kurtz sends Cooper Hummel kind gift after four-homer game. Athletics star is a respectful opponent. The rookie first baseman and reigning back-to-back gave a gift to Houston Astros outfielder after he, a position player, served up what became and final home run in the A’s 15-3 win at Daikin Park on Friday. Kurtz sent Hummel, a known autograph collector, a bat featuring his signature and a warmhearted message, as shared Tuesday by MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart. “Thanks for throwing a strike!” Kurtz humorously wrote. Astros outfielder Cooper Hummel, who pitched Friday and gave up Nick Kurtz’s fourth homer of the game, got an autographed bat from Kurtz. Hummel has an extensive autograph collection. — Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) It was a 77-mph slider inside from Hummel that Kurtz sent 383 feet to left field in the ninth inning. The moment helped Kurtz become the 20th player in MLB history to hit four homers in one game and the first in A’s franchise history. FOUR-HOMER NIGHT FOR NICHOLAS JEFFREY KURTZ ?? — Athletics on NBCS (@NBCSAthletics) Moved quote of Kurtz’s message before tweet Kurtz’s three other homers came on an 82-mph curve off Ryan Gusto, an 81-mph splitter off Nick Hernandez and a 97-mph four-seam fastball off Kaleb Ort, and his other two hits — which rounded out his perfect 6-for-6 day — were on a 93-mph sinker and a 94-mph sinker. He ended the game having driven in eight runs with a total of 19 bases. “It’s hard to think about this day being, you know, kind of real,” Kurtz told Chris Caray and Dallas Braden on “A’s Cast” following the win. “Still feels . So it’s just, it’s pretty remarkable. I’m kind of speechless. I don’t really know what to say.” Hummel, while on the wrong side of the matter, at least can say he helped Kurtz make MLB history. 6/05/25 | Orioles Veteran Outfielder Elects to Test Free Agency After Latest Roster Move. As the Baltimore Orioles look to try and build some momentum of late, some roster decisions are having to be made with players getting healthy. It has easily been the best stretch of baseball lately for the Orioles. Recently, Baltimore outfielder Cooper Hummel elected to test free agency instead of accepting an assignment to the minors. Hummel has bounced around quite a bit in the Majors the last several years, and landed briefly with the Orioles. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/orioles/news/orioles-vetera... |
5/30/25 | Orioles signed new hitter, then released him, then just signed him again. The Baltimore Orioles can't make up their mind on Cooper Hummel. Baltimore had signed Hummel to be a depth piece, but then an Adley Rutschman injury meant Hummel had to be DFA'd to call up another catcher. Once Rutschman got healthy, there was room again for Hummel to be the final bench bat. Hummel used to catch, but that's no longer something in his repertoire, apparently. As a member of the Astros this spring, Hummel had posted a .316/.435/.447 slash line over 17 games. Given the weakness of Houston's outfield, it was almost a bit shocking to see him not break camp after the solid performance. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/astros/news/former-astros-u... |

The constant churn of bringing in new pitchers to the team because of injuries has made one player's journey confusing so far. He was then designated for assignment less than a week later when the team had to select the contract of Spencer Arrighetti. 2/22/24 | SF Giants notes: Blake Sabol begins move to 1B; Winn 'not overwhelmingly concerned' with sore elbow. Cooper Hummel leaned over, grabbed the black-and-tan Rawlings first baseman's mitt out of Blake Sabol's hand and began gesturing around the palm of the yet-to-be broken-in leather. Consider it lesson No. 1 in Sabol's spring training objective: Adding a third position to his arsenal, first base, in addition to his duties behind the plate and in left field. The 25-year-old's reward for lasting the entire season on the major-league roster last season as Rule 5 pick was a full set of options, meaning he'll need all the versatility he can provide in order to spend as much time as possible in San Francisco instead of Triple-A Sacramento. On Thursday, Sabol was absent from the catching group on the main field as he spent his first full day dedicated to first base on the backfields. 2/21/24 | This big, young lefty is 'front and center' in SF Giants' bullpen competition. Just ask Cooper Hummel, who's gone from stepping into the batter's box against Erik Miller at Triple-A last season to catching his bullpens this spring. “I've faced him enough; I hate facing him,” Hummel said. Despite posting a 2.77 ERA in 48 relief appearances last season in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, the call never came to join the Giants' bullpen. “I think he's front and center,” said new manager Bob Melvin, a Cal guy, of Miller's standing in the battle to join Taylor Rogers as the second southpaw in the relief corps, kindly choosing to overlook their colleges' rivalry.
