5/20/25 Blue Jays could shockingly send $106 million All-Star to Triple-A amid struggles. The Toronto Blue Jays did not have much luck in free agency, but were able to swing a blockbuster trade for an All-Star second baseman. The Blue Jays traded Spencer Horwitz and Nick Mitchell in a deal for Andrés Giménez last offseason. Giménez was a .261 career hitter with a .715 OPS going into this season. While he could be sent to Triple-A for a rehab stint, FanSided's Edward Eng believes he could be optioned there for a longer period of time.

4/28/25 Guardians' Polarizing All-Star Trade Was Clearly the Right Move. The Cleveland Guardians made multiple trades during the MLB offseason, and most of them were not received all that well by the fan base. Given the fact that the Guardians have become widely known for being a rather frugal organization that doesn't always make significant strides to improve their roster, you can understand fan frustration. The Guardians sent Gimenez to the Toronto Blue Jays for intriguing outfield prospect Nick Mitchell and first baseman Spencer Horwitz, the latter of which was flipped to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a deal that brought pitcher Luis Ortiz to Cleveland.

2/19/25 Pirates outfielders vocal on Oneil Cruz's 'bazooka,' move to center field. The Pittsburgh Pirates did not do much to address the team's lack of offense in 2024. Players like Spencer Horwitz, Ke'Bryan Hayes, and Oneil Cruz are expected to be the future of the franchise. Pittsburgh's 26-year-old star shortstop, Oneil Cruz, is being moved to center field full time. Thus far in his major league career, he has played 202 of his 226 games at shortstop, having made 42 errors there.

1/27/25 Pirates Receive Negative Offseason Review. The Pittsburgh Pirates' inactivity so far this offseason hasn't come as a surprise, but that doesn't mean they are exempt from criticism. Despite having a young core at the major league level with more upper-level talent on the way in the farm system, the Pirates have done next to nothing to ensure that they are capitalizing on their potential window of contention. Pittsburgh has shelled out a grand total of $8 million to free agents, ranking No. 23 in total value among all MLB teams per Spotrac. The Pirates' biggest move came on the trade front, as they acquired former Toronto Blue Jays infielder Spencer Horwitz in a three-team swap that saw Pittsburgh send right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz as well as left-handers Josh Hartle and Michael Kennedy to the Cleveland Guardians.

1/24/25 Pirates Under Fire for Quiet Offseason. With a young and ascending starting rotation that could be capable of elevating a Pittsburgh Pirates team that went 76-86 in consecutive seasons, adding a pair of proven bats felt like a necessity this offseason. Instead, Pittsburgh has only made one addition by trading for left-handed hitting first baseman Spencer Horwitz. While Horwitz is more than capable of helping improve the Pirates offense, he's still a question mark heading into this season given he's played 112 games across two seasons in the big leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays. With the Pirates having a trio of Paul Skenes, Jared Jones and Mitch Keller and a pair of top 100 prospects, Bubba Chandler and Thomas Harrington, Baseball America analyst J.J. Cooper noted his frustration with the franchise and them sticking with the status quo rather than being aggressive in improving the offense.

1/22/25 Pirates Need Jack Suwinski to Bounce Back. After making only one move of significance so far this offseason by acquiring infielder Spencer Horwitz from the Cleveland Guardians, the Pittsburgh Pirates appear content with relying on some of its in-house options to step up and improve an offense that posted a National League-low .672 OPS in 2024. While platooning Joshua Palacios with Billy Cook is an intriguing option at the position, the club would benefit from Jack Suwinski bouncing back and emerging as a middle-of-the-order bat. Part of the trade that sent Adam Frazier to the San Diego Padres at the deadline in 2021, Suwinski made his MLB debut for the Pirates the following year and slashed .202/.298/.411 with 19 home runs and 1.2 fWAR in 106 games.
