6/27/25 Star Diamondbacks Closer Likely Out All of 2026. Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo revealed Friday that Justin Martinez had ligament replacement (Tommy John) surgery, along with some type of brace procedure as well. Heading into the surgery, the indications were that Martinez would not require a new ligament. Based on previous news conferences, it was thought he would have the Brace Procedure, which offers a 12-13 month timeline. Counting out from now, the best case scenario then would be at least 14 months, which would take Martinez to the end of August 2026.

6/20/25 Loss of A.J. Puk, Gabriel Moreno adds to D-backs' injury woes. A week after announcing closer Justin Martinez will undergo Tommy John surgery, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced Friday that A.J. Puk will undergo the same procedure. The club opened the season with visions of Martinez, a right-hander, and the lefty Puk potentially sharing closer duties. Now, Puk -- who has actually been out since April 18 -- is the fourth member of the Diamondbacks' staff set for major elbow surgery, joining starters Corbin Burnes and Jordan Montgomery.

6/12/25 Shelby Miller is Stepping Up for the Diamondbacks. While Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has not officially named a closer since Justin Martinez went down with an elbow injury, there was little doubt about who would be called upon to close out a 5-2 ballgame on Wednesday afternoon. Shelby Miller came on to retire the first two batters, gave up a single, and then struck out Dominic Canzone on a splitter down and away in the zone to record his seventh save of the year. There was no ninth inning drama, as Miller did what he's done all year, which is step into the breach and provide stability. In a year that has seen more than it's share of instability in the bullpen for the Diamondbacks, in large part due to injuries, Miller has been a revelation.

5/29/25 Unforced Errors Bite the Diamondbacks in Series Loss to the Pirates. The Diamondbacks let another series get away from them, dropping two of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Chase Field. If there is one central theme to this series, it's been the unforced errors. In the eighth inning of Monday's game, Eugenio Suárez booted a routine play at third base. Two batters later, Justin Martinez had to come in to save a 5-0 game.

5/26/25 Justin Martinez looks like dominant. self vs. Pirates. Justin Martinez's first outing back with the Diamondbacks during Saturday's loss to St. Louis did not go as planned, but he came out of it feeling strong and that he threw the ball pretty well. On Monday, the D-backs put him in another demanding spot, having him face the bases loaded with nobody out while holding onto a 5-0 lead in the eighth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Martinez's mindset was simple: ”They can't even hit a foul ball.” Martinez, who spent more than three weeks on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, jumped ahead of Bryan Reynolds 0-2.

As the Arizona Diamondbacks head into the second half of their six-game road trip, they could be getting some much-needed help in their bullpen, as injured reliever Justin Martinez could return this weekend in St. Louis, according to manager Torey Lovullo. "There's a really good chance he will be joining us in St. Louis," Lovullo said after Arizona's loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. 5/22/25 D-backs' Justin Martinez: 'Good chance' to return this week. After Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Justin Martinez pumped 101.5 mph heaters during a rehab game at Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, manager Torey Lovullo more than hinted he will return this weekend at the St. Louis Cardinals. Martinez has been on the injured list since May 1 with right shoulder inflammation, as his velocity previously dropped while he dealt with shoulder fatigue or dead arm. “There's a really good chance he will be joining us in St. Louis,” Lovullo said after Wednesday's game.

5/21/25 Can Justin Martinez Stabilize the Diamondbacks Bullpen?. The Arizona Diamondbacks are about to receive a boost to their tired and ineffective bullpen. Closer Justin Martinez appears to have just successfully completed his rehab from an injured list stint, and should be rejoining the team for the weekend series starting Friday against the Cardinals in St. Louis. Without Martinez, or co-closer A.J. Puk, the D-backs bullpen has been a disaster. Shelby Miller has filled in as the closer since Martinez went on the injured list with shoulder inflammation on May 1.

5/17/25 Diamondbacks get huge Justin Martinez injury update. The Arizona Diamondbacks received some good news over the weekend as right-hander Justin Martinez made a successful rehab appearance in the Arizona Complex League, offering optimism about a return to the big-league bullpen in the near future. Martinez, who landed on the injured list earlier this month with right shoulder inflammation, pitched one inning Saturday against the Giants' ACL squad. According to manager Torey Lovullo, Martinez followed the outing by throwing an additional 10 pitches in the bullpen — another positive sign in his recovery process. While Martinez's fastball didn't quite reach the triple-digit velocity he was known for last season — when he averaged over 100 mph — it was a marked improvement from his last big-league appearance on April 30, when his velocity hovered around 95 mph. A rival scout confirmed that Martinez hit 97 mph with one pitch and sat 98–99 mph with the rest during Saturday's outing, showing significant progress in terms of arm strength and overall health.

5/05/25 Diamondbacks notes: Justin Martinez to begin throwing soon. Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Justin Martinez will begin a throwing program later this week after his MRI over the weekend came back clean, manager Torey Lovullo said among a series of injury updates on Monday. Martinez went on the 15-day injured list on Thursday with right shoulder inflammation. Lovullo was noncommittal about Martinez returning shortly after the 15 days are up, saying they have to be careful to not rush him back. Martinez's velocity decreased in each of his last three outings, dropping from 100 mph average sinker to a 95.5 mph sinker right before he hit the IL.
