6/15/25 Nationals' bat-retrieving dog Bruce laps up pregame attention, makes MLB debut. The dog days of summer arrived at Nationals Park. Bruce, a 21-month-old golden retriever, fetched a bat during a ceremony before the Washington Nationals’ game against the Miami Marlins as part of a Pups in the Park promotion. He retrieved bats the last two seasons with the Rochester Red Wings, Washington’s Triple-A affiliate. Bruce, wearing a bandana with an “MLB debut” patch he received when he arrived at the stadium, was presented a commemorative bat. He then took a circuitous route from the dugout toward first base after Nationals reliever Zach Brzykcy dropped the bat in foul territory before the bat dog collected his quarry.

12/27/23 Washington Nationals news & notes: Quick hits & leftovers; Rule 5 pick; 2024 Draft spot + Dylan Crews.... Ahead of this year's deadline to add Rule 5-eligible players to the 40-man roster, protecting them from potential selection, Washington's Nationals added just pitchers the club thought they might lose in the draft. “Players signed at age 18 or younger need to be added to their club's 40-Man roster within five seasons or they become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft,” as noted on MLB.com, and, any, “… players who signed at age 19 or older need to be protected within four seasons.” Back in mid-November, the Nationals added right-handed pitchers Zach Brzykcy and Cole Henry, and left-handers DJ Herz and Mitchell Parker to the 40-Man. “We thought that they were capable of pitching in the big leagues for some team, and we wanted to keep them,” GM Mike Rizzo told reporters before the Rule 5 Draft took place on the last day of the Winter Meetings earlier this month.
