7/27/25 Nationals make decision on trading MacKenzie Gore. The Washington Nationals are clearly trade deadline sellers. Gore is a bit older than the likes of James Wood, C.J. Abrams and Dylan Crews, and he has only a couple years of club control left. "The Nationals say that their prized young core of James Wood, C.J. Abrams, MacKenzie Gore and Dylan Crews is staying put."

7/25/25 Nationals Rookie Brady House Has Quietly Been Very Good Over First Month in MLB. With August just over the horizon and the dog days of summer in full effect, the Washington Nationals have remained one of the worst teams in all of baseball. The Nationals will enter Friday night's matchup against the Minnesota Twins with an abysmal 41-61 record, a mark that ranks second worst in the entire National League behind the Colorado Rockies. The only real silver lining to be found for Washington amid their futility this year has been the emergence of a talented group of young players who the team hopes will ultimately lead the organization back to postseason success. Star sluggers James Wood and CJ Abrams have received a lion's share of the coverage in this regard, but there has also been another youngster who has quietly been finding his footing since his recent call up.

7/21/25 Nationals Star Insists Home Run Derby Isn't To Blame for Prolonged Slump. One of the lone bright spots surrounding the Washington Nationals this season has been the emergence of James Wood. After putting together a good stretch when he was called up on July 1 during the 2024 campaign, the slugging outfielder has started to become a household name, earning his first All-Star Game selection this year and an invite to compete in the Home Run Derby. Wood's struggles have extended far beyond just that stretch, though, with him going 4-for-40 at the plate with four walks and 18 strikeouts since July 3, the game where he went 5-for-5 with a homer and two RBI against the Detroit Tigers. "No, I don't really buy that," he said, per Mark Zuckerman of MASN.

7/19/25 Nationals Predicted to Trade Kyle Finnegan to Division Rival at Trade Deadline. As the Washington Nationals start up the second half of the season, it has once again been a disappointing year in 2025. After seeing some glimpses that their young core might be emerging in 2024, it has been a step in the wrong direction or a lateral direction for the Nationals. This is a team that has some budding stars in James Wood and MacKenzie Gore. With the franchise also being hesitant to spend money on veterans to help out, the rebuild for Washington has been going on for quite some time now.

7/18/25 Nationals Can Add Talent to Deep Farm System Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline. Given how poorly the Washington Nationals have performed on the field over the last few years, they have had ample opportunities to add high-end talent to their farm system in the MLB Draft. Left fielder James Wood, shortstop CJ Abrams and ace MacKenzie Gore all came courtesy of the Padres.

7/16/25 How James Wood became a stabilizing force in the Nationals' season of upheaval by 'sticking to' his plan. Wood, still just 22 years old, has provided a rare spark of light for the NL East bottom-dwellers

7/15/25 Nationals Receive Medicore Grade for Surprising First Overall Pick in MLB Draft. It has been an extremely disappointing first half of the season for the Washington Nationals. For the past two years, the Nationals have won just 71 games, and with the poor first half, they are trending toward that once again. There are a couple of bright spots within the organization, with both James Wood and MacKenzie Gore looking like great players and perennial All-Stars. The struggles in the first half cost both manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo their jobs, which was tough timing with the 2025 MLB draft right around the corner.

7/15/25 Nationals Young Superstar Showed Off His Elite Power in the Home Run Derby. Perhaps the biggest bright spot in what's otherwise been a very disappointing season for the Washington Nationals has been the emergence of star slugger James Wood. Much like former star Nationals youngsters like Bryce Harper and Juan Soto, Wood has already begun to show the markings of a bona fide superstar early in his tenure with the team. This immense talent has, in turn, led to the 21-year-old being named to his first NL All-Star team after putting together a stellar first-half performance.

7/14/25 Nationals' James Wood has best plan for using Home Run Derby winnings. James Wood has a good plan. He wants to go out on the field in Atlanta on Monday night and win the MLB Home Run Derby. And then the Washington Nationals superstar wants to go to Waffle House. Seriously: Someone asked James Wood what he planned to do with the prize money if he wins the Derby: “Probably go to Waffle House.” — Chelsea Janes (@chelsea_janes) July 14, 2025 MORE: Meet Jack Bauer, the MLB Draft prospect who throws 103 and wears No. 24 Wood has as much natural power as anyone in the derby. At 6-foot-7, the lefty swinger will definitely be a sight to behold. Let's give the man those winnings. He deserves a hefty meal. MORE MLB NEWS: Dodgers draft the latest Leiter pursuing MLB pitching

7/14/25 James Wood has a tall task — lead the Washington Nationals back to great heights. James Wood is already the centerpiece of the Washington Nationals. It's going to be a tall task for Wood, though. The Nationals were supposed to break through this season, but it hasn't happened for them. Wood was the most crucial piece acquired when the Nationals traded Juan Soto to the Padres, but that makes his role in the rebuild clear: He has to lead it.

7/14/25 How old is James Wood? Where Nationals rookie would rank among MLB's youngest HR Derby winners. In his first full season, James Wood has already established himself as one of the most dynamic players in the league. The Nationals outfielder, who was a key piece of the Juan Soto trade, has 23 home runs and a .940 OPS and is one of the bright young stars in the league. Wood made his first All-Star Game this year, and he also committed to participating in the Home Run Derby for the first time. "It's just an honor to be invited," Wood said, via MLB.com.

It hasn't been a fun season for the Washington Nationals overall, but everyone in the fanbase has a chance to watch the franchise's superstar slugger put on a show during the Home Run Derby. After emerging as one of the biggest long ball threats in the sport through the first half of the season, James Wood now has an opportunity to win some hardware. Starting with Acuna, he missed the first part of the year after coming back from ACL surgery.
