7/28/25 Astros' Rookie Sensation Cam Smith Has Had Month To Forget During July. Houston Astros rookie sensation Cam Smith has been one of the most intriguing players in all of Major League Baseball this season, as the first-year slugger has emerged as the budding new face of one of the game's most successful franchises over the past decade. The centerpiece of the blockbuster trade the Astros made with the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Kyle Tucker, Smith shocked many by making the Opening Day roster after only playing in a handful of minor league games in 2024 for the Cubs.

7/23/25 Brice Matthews Should Be Astros Starting Second Baseman Going Forward No Matter What. The Houston Astros have another star rookie. Following in the footsteps of Cam Smith -- who rocketed into stardom during spring training to make the Opening Day roster -- the Astros have another youngster who is beginning to look like a future foundational piece of this team going forward; Brice Matthews. Called up on July 11 for his Major League debut only because multiple infielders were hit with injuries, the current top-ranked prospect in Houston's pipeline is making his case to own the starting second base spot for the rest of the season. Predictably, Matthews was quiet when he first faced MLB pitching, going 0-for-7 in his first two games before collecting his first big league hit in the first contest following the All-Star break.

7/18/25 Astros Already Lagging Farm System Likely To Take Hit Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline. The Houston Astros' farm system was one of the lowest ranked in baseball during the 2025 preseason. That is part of the reason people were so excited about Cam Smith, a 2024 first-round pick of the Chicago Cubs who was acquired in the Kyle Tucker blockbuster trade this past offseason. Alas, Smith never made it into the Astros' minor league. More News: Astros Seventh-Round Selection Named Their Best Value Pick in MLB Draft He performed so well during spring training that he earned a spot on the Opening Day roster as the starting right fielder. Smith is now one of several top prospects that Houston has had graduate during the 2025 campaign, leaving what was already an underwhelming farm system

7/12/25 New ESPN mock draft has the Cubs doing something they haven't done since 2020. Chicago hasn't gone this direction in the MLB Draft since the shortened COVID-19 season. The general expectation seems to be that the Chicago Cubs will once again draft a college talent, a path that's led to solid results in recent years with Cam Smith out of Florida State, Matt Shaw out of the University of Maryland and Cade Horton from the University of Oklahoma.

7/09/25 Astros Breakout Center Fielder Has Been Team's Unsung Hero This Season. The Houston Astros entered the 2025 season with numerous unknowns up and down their roster, meaning that the team would be relying on a number of new faces to step up if they wanted to continue dominating the AL West. Much of the media coverage surrounding the Astros' success has centered on the team's superb pitching and AL Rookie of the Year frontrunner, Cam Smith, but there has also been another largely unheralded name who has played just as big a role as anybody in getting the team to where it is now. This would be centerfielder Jake Meyers, who, now in his fifth year with the team, is putting together the best season yet of his career.

7/06/25 Astros Biggest Surprise Has Been Sudden Emergence of Young Rookie Superstar. The Houston Astros have seized control of the American League West and look like one of the best teams in baseball over the last month or so. While familiar and new faces have combined to step up in order to allow this team to be playing its best baseball coming off what was an ugly stretch to start the year, one player is starting to stand out among the rest of his teammates. When the Astros promoted Cam Smith to the big leagues at the start of the season following his incredible spring training, many questioned whether or not the move was too early.

7/02/25 Houston Astros eyeing trade for dynamic Orioles outfielder at MLB trade deadline?. The Houston Astros are putting together another fabulous campaign in the 2025 season, sitting a comfortable seven games ahead of the Seattle Mariners in the AL West standings. But let's face it: The Astros could use some help in the outfield. And we're not saying that Cam Smith and Jake Meyers aren't pulling their weight, but a jolt in the Astros outfield as they still rearrange without having Kyle Tucker definitely wouldn't hurt. And with Astros general manager Dana Brown being very adamant about having a left-handed bat on his trade deadline shopping list, one name sticks out that fits both criteria and would make a lot of sense for the team. That name would be Baltimore Orioles outfielder

The MLB's 2025 All-Star Futures Game rosters were announced on Monday morning and there were two Houston Astros prospects that made the cut. The two participants will be shortstop Brice Matthews and right-handed pitcher Alimber Santa. This game is meant to highlight the best that the next generation of MLB starters has to offer, meaning that the decision makers are very high on those two Astros Youngsters. 6/28/25 Cam Smith heating up as Astros chase series win vs. Cubs. Houston Astros rookie right fielder Cam Smith capitalized on his second opportunity to bat cleanup on Friday, and the timing of his latest exceptional night at the plate couldn't have been better. Playing in his first game against the organization that selected him in the first round of the 2024 draft out of Florida State, Smith finished 2-for-2 with a three-run homer and a pair of walks in the Astros' 7-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Smith will look to say hot on Saturday when Houston hosts Chicago in the second contest of the three-game series.

6/21/25 Astros International Free Agent Signing Providing Incredible Value With Production. The Houston Astros are in a tough spot heading into the MLB trade deadline because of the current state of their farm system. For years, the Astros have been contending, which meant dipping into the minor leagues to address any needs that may have popped up. For nearly a decade, they have been buyers ahead of the MLB trade deadline, leading to a depletion of their farm system. Houston is currently lacking many impact prospects, with their system taking a hit when Cam Smith, the crown jewel of the Kyle Tucker blockbuster with the Chicago Cubs, made the Opening Day roster and never appeared in the minors.

6/17/25 Cam Smith hits 2 of Astros' 5 homers in 13-3 win over Athletics. Cam Smith hit two of Houston's five home runs and finished with four hits as the Astros routed the Athletics 13-3 on Tuesday night to halt their four-game winning streak. 6/16/25 Twins get swept in Houston, headed to Cincy next. It was not the most enjoyable Father's Day weekend for the Minnesota Twins who have found just about every way to lose a ball game over their four-game losing streak. They lost Friday 10-3 in blowout fashion, lost 3-2 in heartbreaking fashion when Astros rookie Cam Smith walked them off in the bottom of the ninth, and then had got walked off again yesterday afternoon to lose in a low scoring 2-1 game. But the Twins can look at the bright side, even though they have lost four in a row, they still sit in second place in the AL Central. The Twins are 9 games back of the Detroit Tigers who are one of the hottest teams in baseball. Minnesota fell to 36-35 on the season and are in danger of dropping

6/15/25 WATCH: Astros Star Rookie Secures Win With First Career Walk-Off. The Houston Astros have rounded into one of the best teams in all of baseball over the past month, and they've done so with a roster that looks very different than the ones that led them to two World Series titles. A key part of these new-look Astros has been rookie sensation Cam Smith, who was the centerpiece of the package Houston received from the Chicago Cubs in the Kyle Tucker trade. The 22-year-old burst onto the scene for the Astros during an electric spring training, and he secured a spot on the Opening Day roster after spending just 36 games in the minors. There were some early growing pains for Smith to start the season, but the rookie slugger has begun to hit his stride over the past few weeks, bumping his slash line for the year up .251/.324/.364 in the process.
