7/06/25	Extra special: 10th-inning homers by Sweeney, Greene give Tigers sweep of Guardians. The Tigers swept the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field this weekend. Trey Sweeney, whose batting average is sinking ever close to the .200 mark, swatted an opposite-field three-run home run that triggered a six-run outburst in the top of the 10th inning, sending the Tigers to a 7-2 win, extending the Guardians' losing streak to an unfathomable 10 games. Riley Greene, who had been hitless in the series, swatted his 22nd homer in the inning, a two-run shot also to left field. Trey Sweeney drove in six runs and Kerry Carpenter drove in five on Sunday afternoon to power the Detroit Tigers to a 13-1 rout over the Los Angeles Angels in the finale of a four-game series in Anaheim, Calif. Sweeney, Carpenter and Colt Keith each homered for the Tigers, who have won four of their last five games. Little things came back to hurt Detroit in a manner that hasn't been seen in a while. The Tigers committed two errors, both by shortstop Trey Sweeney in the bottom of the seventh, that allowed the Astros to score four runs during that frame to break things wide open. 4/05/25	White Sox' miscommunication leads to botched play at home plate. The bases were loaded in the third inning with Tigers shortstop Trey Sweeney up to bat with no outs. Sweeney hit a softly hit ball toward first base with the infield in, and first baseman Andrew Vaughn attempted to throw home to get an out and prevent a run from scoring. Catcher Korey Lee said he was just trying to get an out, so he pointed toward first base. Manager Will Venable said, “everyone's mindset is to play at home” in that scenario. One of the success stories of this camp for the Tigers is a player who likely will spend most of the season in Double A. Catcher Thayron Liranzo, 21, acquired from the Dodgers with Trey Sweeney in the Jack Flaherty trade last July, continues to make a positive impression, more than a week after being reassigned to minor-league camp. “The reason they were kept (in camp) so long is that they earned it,” manager AJ Hinch said last week when he announced that both Liranzo and infielder prospect Hao-Yu Lee were sent out. The Tigers blew a two-run lead to the Orioles in the ninth inning Saturday afternoon at Oriole Park and would have had a walk-off loss if rookie shortstop Trey Sweeney hadn't saved the game by making a great catch of a popup in shallow left field with the winning run on third. In extra innings, the Tigers scored two in the 10th, then put away the Orioles for a 6-4 victory to get to within a half-game of the Twins for the last AL wild card.
